'I sleep with one eye open': Woman, 37, who was 'raped by pizza delivery boy, 16, as her daughter slept beside her' opens up about the horrific attack she says ruined her life

A woman who was attacked and raped in her Manhattan apartment in 2012 has come forward to detail the horrific night a teenage pizza boy allegedly assaulted her as her 7-year-old daughter slept in the bed beside her. Kia Graves, 37, reveals that her life has been utterly turned upside down since the night Cesar Lucas, 17, is charged with slipping into her apartment and having his way with her while out on a run for his father's 10th Avenue pizza restaurant. 'I have nightmares thinking that he’s getting out of jail, and I wake up all the time making sure my door is locked,' said the shell-shocked mom. Unfortunately, her door was not locked that September night. Cesar Lucas was working as a delivery boy at Sal’s Pizza in the same Manhattan neighborhood as the woman’s luxury apartment building. He was delivering a pizza to the next-door flat when he noticed that the door was slightly ajar and allegedly entered the apartment. Graves, a former actress turned model agency employee, had gone to bed with her daughter an hour and a half before the alleged incident. It was the last time Grave says she's had a normal night's sleep. 'I sleep with one eye open, basically,' she told the New York Daily News. 'I have panic attacks and I wake up in sweats.' Graves no longer works and lives each day crippled by her memories of the attack. 'I don’t know what to do,' she said. 'I’m just seeing my doctor and hoping for the best.'

So she leaves her door open and turns around and is going to sue everybody in sight.

Something is missing from this story.

Sigh. Crime statistics are down in NYC. The Daily Mail spends its entire budget on finding horrendous stories about AMERICA. Ever notice all the crazy stories about people in backwoods America, Florida and Texas? That’s a British thing, unfortunately. They call it “click-bait.”

Like you, I was talking about the lousy reporting. Am I the only one who thinks being raped next to one’s sleeping child is not conducive to a good night’s sleep?

Just because crime statistics are down doesn’t mean that crime is down. The statistical crime is based on reported crimes. Unreported crime does not factor in.

Sorry, crime is down. It’s been trending that way for years - as are other cities. Sorry it doesn’t fit with people’s scenario of NYC as a Soweto ghetto.

Where would you go? What country has true liberty and freedom and a Christian value system any more? I know the liberals have destroyed ours, but I think they have contaminated the rest of the planet too. I’m just curious what country would be best to bail to.

New information in this difficult to suss out story: she routinely left her door unlocked to allow relatives in without a key. The perp had robbed a customer prior yet Sal’s Pizza did not fire him. Still know nothing about the building itself except from the Daily Mail.

Where was dad?

Dad had been there earlier that night and left.

She has two other roommates

They live across the hall from her mother and leave the door open as a regular policy.

This one has better writing, but still leaves out important details. http://m.nydailynews.com/1.1591450

OK, it was a doorman building. Big building. They cut staff and only one doorman was working after midnight when this occurred. He didn’t wonder when the rapist didn’t appear after 10 minutes? Sheesh. Some odd details but I don’t want to think too much about this crime.

She left the door unlocked, not open. Still a very stupid thing to do. Why not give family members a key? I always gave my parents a key to my apartment and never, ever had it unlocked. But of course my door automatically locked and had some device built in so that it swung closed and slammed shut. A similar building too, although much smaller.

This article from DM says "He was delivering a pizza to the next-door flat when he noticed that the door was slightly ajar and allegedly entered the apartment."

Looks to me like the victim was complacent, and just assumed nothing bad would ever happen, because it never had before in her experience.

I can’t see in the Daily News article where it said she left the door ajar. Perhaps the News was being too polite to get into that. But I just noticed she lives in the Lincoln Center area - nice area although of course creeps are everywhere. For some reason, I assumed it was one of the big new buildings on the west side/mid town area.

The doorman really did not do his job that night.

>> Where was his dad?

I see the confusion. I was referring to the dad of the daughter sleeping beside the mom.

I knew what you were referring to. I was referring to the rapist's father. From the article: ......"The then 16-year-old was on a delivery for his father's restaurant Sal's Pizza on Manhattan's West Side. He'd been charged with breaking into apartments before".....

The father of the rapist knew his son was a criminal and allowed him to continue his criminal behavior and further escalate to rape.

To blame the woman for being raped because her daughter's father was not around is wrong. Whose fault would it be if the woman's husband was out of town earning a living? Whose fault would it be if her husband was sleeping in a different room because he snored and didn't hear the rapist? The blame lies with the rapist. The father was totally irresponsible knowing what he knew and giving him a delivery job.

You’re misrepresenting my comment by insinuating that I’m blaming the family for the rape.

Would you object if I asked where her gun was?

My terse yet serious remark was a statement on modern, fatherless households. I was obviously mistaken about this particular family; however, the excerpt gives no indication otherwise. And yes, I believe the destruction of the family has given way to this type of predatory behavior.
