Google Autocomplete Embarrasses Us (and Our States) Again

Google's Autocomplete function remains a steady source of chuckles, disappointments, and unintentional insights.

Case in point:

While by no means always a source of goodwill, Google Autocomplete also reminds us of what we—the royal Googling "we"— wish to know about the world around us. Take, for instance, our curiosities about the 2012 presidential candidates.

The same principle when applied to each American state yields a mosaic of obvious caricature and unexpected intrigue. This weekend, Amazing Maps released a recent map of the top Google Autocomplete query for each American state.

The formulation was: "Why is [state] so..." The results were...dazzling.

Pretty strange. I tried googling some of the states, and they give four or five completions in descending order. Most of them are equally amusing.

Vermont is white, liberal, cold, healthy, and awesome. Oddly enough, if you google it again, you may get slightly different results. Like “Why is Vermont service center so slow?”

New Hampshire expensive? It's one of the least heavily taxed states in the nation...no income tax *or* sales tax.

I take that as a compliment but I’m sure it’s not intended.

Too bad these people don’t understand that Google’s autocomplete and search results are tailored for the person making the requests. This is often termed a filter bubble. http://dontbubble.us/

Just checked "taxfoudation.org" an excellent source of info on taxation in the US.According to them Massachusetts,in 2010,collected $1,986 per capita in property taxes, making it the 8th highest while NH collected $2,463 per capita, making it the 4th highest. Not a particularly big difference.Add in The Gay State's *other* taxes/fees/tolls,etc and NH looks pretty damn good.

But NH appears to be trending Maoist (you can't take in all the refugees from Communist states and remain unaffected) so it seems likely to me that they'll have an income and/or sales tax sooner rather than later.
