A 16-year-old Texas girl who plummeted more than 3,000 feet to the ground in an Oklahoma skydiving accident survived and is recovering from her many injuries, a doctor said Tuesday.

Dr. Jeffrey Bender, a trauma surgeon at OU Medical Center who treated Makenzie Wethington when she was flown Saturday from a skydiving school in Chickasha, said the girl hurt her liver and broke her pelvis, lumbar spine in her lower back, a shoulder blade and several ribs. She also has a broken tooth.

"I don't know the particulars of the accident as I wasn't there. But if she truly fell 3,000 feet, I have no idea how she survived," Bender said at a news conference at the hospital, where the girl's parents also spoke to reporters.

Not only did she survive, but she was in good condition Tuesday, Bender said, and was expected to leave the intensive care unit. Still, she has a long recovery ahead. Bender said it will be several weeks before she can bear any weight.

I did not see in article, usually this type of activity requires a signed release and a waiver.
Since injured teen is a minor- dad probably signed.

I don’t think he is idiotic for allowing it. I’m glad my dad allowed me and my brothers to race moto-x when we were kids. But sometimes things go wrong and it is not anyone’s fault. This guy is sue happy and wants to stop everybody else from ever experiencing anything that might hurt their kid.

There are a lot of ifs I’d want answered before my teen went up with 6 hours of instruction. In fact, I think I’d have chosen a place that does buddy jumps or whatever they’re called for the first one.

To me it was as if the father was saying “Why didn’t anyone stop her from doing this dangerous thing?” The first person that should have then, is her parent.

Yes it’s great to experience things and the chances that this would happen to another person their first time are probably slim. I’m not saying not to allow dangerous things, but the dad wants it both ways is all.

She reached terminal velocity way before she had fallen 3,000 ft.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Makenzie “Mongo” Wethington. Don’t try to kill her. You’ll only make her mad.

““, said the girl hurt her liver and broke her pelvis, lumbar spine in her lower back, a shoulder blade and several ribs. She also has a broken tooth.”

good condition can be a relative term”

I suspect that most of the people who actually survive this never walk again, so I’d call this good - and then wonder the rest of my life how I could have been this stupid.

This is not a hobby that has held even the smallest interest for me.

Why is it that if I’m old, I have to pay more for health insurance. If I smoke, I have to pay more for health insurance. If I’m fat, I have to pay more for health insurance. But if I do stupid stuff like this, no problemo???

I’m thinking she’s probably done with her skydiving phase.

Dang lucky to be alive.

All commercial jump facilities have been altered; DO NOT allow this ‘Father’ or any of his relatives to jump at your facility, or you risk being sued if anything goes wrong, EVEN THOUGH HE PROPBABLY SIGNED A WAVIER of liability, and an acknowledgement of all risks inherent.

I understand the family would be upset, but that is a very risky sport, even when all goes well. I’ll bet the girl wont be going back up there, if she ever gets over the shock of falling. She should have jumped in tandem or tied up with a trainer. If I could lose enough weight (20 to 30lbs), I would very much like to jump. It would be an unforgettable experience! I may have to accept Zip-Lining instead.

Indeed. If they told him he can jump out of the window... ah, wait a minute!

Either the reporter is kicking himself this morning, or this is a sad reflection of the America we live in. The story is focused on liability issues, and whether a 16 year old should have been allowed to jump. Maybe it’s just me, but my first and primary interest is how she survived. For sure, she will have an interesting story to tell her grandchildren. I trust that she will soon enough learn about the other scattered survivors of such falls, mostly military pilots, largely from WWII, who chose to jump rather than burn, and bailed out with missing or damaged parachutes from high altitude.

He’s lying. Otherwise, why go to Oklahoma to skydive when there are plenty of skydiving places in Texas? The answer to that is the Oklahoma allows newbies to dive solo ... Texas does not.

Sound words of my Father: Why would you jump out of a perfectly good running airplane?
He was a stunt pilot, and is now almost 96 years old.
