For those watching their weight, choosing a restaurant salad over a fast food burger may not be the wisest idea.

A restaurant meal that includes an appetizer, salad entrée and one side can contain an average of 1,494 calories, compared to a greasy McDonald’s Big Mac Extra Value Meal that will set you back 1,130 calories, according to the Journal of Nutrition, Education and Behavior. […]

A Burger King Whopper with cheese, for example, has 710 calories. Comparatively, an Applebee’s Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad contains 800 calories and an Applebee’s Cheeseburger will set you back 940 calories.

Similarly, Chipotle’s Chicken Burrito Bowl can set you back on average 775 calories, but Chili’s Fresh Mex Chicken Bowl contains 960 calories. Meanwhile a Chili’s Trade Jalapeño Smokehouse Bacon Burger with Ranch comes in at a whopping 2, 210 calories. …

Yeah, I’m not big on the loose meat sandwiches, which I assume you had on your visit. One of the few things I miss about Iowa is the quality of pork, most notably the tenderloins. No restaurants do that here.

I can still eat burger king. I barf up mcDs instantly. Not sure why but think it must be some of the chemicals. It’s amazing how many calories the salads have. Are they sure of those data? If the damned salads have that many calories iM gonna stick with the double whoppers ! What the hell? May as well enjoy the stuff if it’s all got so many calories anyway.

How is it possible to go to Steak n Shake and NOT get the chili 5 ways?

How can I try the chili when the only words I can say are "Wisconsin Buttery Steak Burger, unsweetened iced tea with lemon, and a 99 cent Oreo ice cram sandwich."?

Always ask for extra dressing!

(Am I the only person who wants the MOST calories for his buck?)

Yes Culvers! I spent several months in St. Paul last year and Culvers became a staple. The locals did not think highly of Culvers, but I thought it was the best burger around for the price.

I remember the hamburgers were good, but once I tasted chili 5 ways I couldn’t get any other words out of my mouth except maybe and a large chocolate malt.

Methuselah ate what he found on his plate,
And never, as people do now
Did he note the amount of calorie count;
He ate it because it was chow.
He wasn't disturbed as at dinner he sat
Devouring a roast or a pie,
To think it was lacking in HDL fat
Or a couple of vitamins shy.
He cheerfully chewed each species of food,
Unmindful of troubles or fears
That his health might be hurt by some fancy dessert;
And he lived over 900 years!

Late 70s I would kill for a double whopper with cheese (Ok, we won’t discuss other recreational mind altering activities)

They suck now.

Used to be truly flame broiled. Now they taste like steam table microwave crap with plastic tomatoes. Just disgusting.

The true joy is ordering one on a military base that combines all the attributes of a fast food employee with an AAFES employee. Not much chance of either one fogging a mirror, much less the result of that unholy alliance.

And we won’t even discuss Wendy’s slide to craptastic status.

A Wendy’s Double Cheese used to be an ultimate hangover burger. Now if you can get past the blank eyed slack jawed mouth breathing vegetable at the counter the burger tastes like a barely reconstituted beef patty from an MRE haphazardly slapped together with tomatoes done by Mattel.

All put together with Lego hands that have the fine motor skills of a boat paddle and tossed at you with the arrogance of here’s your shit. Eat Hearty.

At Camp Red Cloud in the 70’s, before franchises got there, AAFES had a burger called the Smuggler which was three times better than a Whopper or Big Mac.

Gotta go with you on that.

I have had some outstanding burgers in base bowling alleys and other AAFES or club joints in my years.

We don’t have the “Wisconsin Buttery Steak Burger,” but now I’m interested. Maybe if my wife goes to the drive-thru instead of me.

I was once TDY there at the Army Liason Element of 314th Air Division from CRC for Team Spirit. My orders read Intelligence Analyst PV1/ Intelligence Senior Sergeant MSGT, if you can believe it. Not every day you’re slotted seven spots above yourself...
