Who exactly do you think Mexicans are? Think they sailed over from some country in Europe? No, while every family tree is different the vast majority are descendants of American Indians (typically with a lot more Indian blood than you have, my friend).

Grow up. It’s a cultural thing.

They are Mestiso, not Mexican.

Mexicans are from Mexico and comprise many ethnicities. French, German, Spanish, Irish, etc.

Case in point; Salma Hayek is from Mexico, born, raised and by nationality. Seems she is also of Lebanese heritage.

Jessica Alba was born in California, United States. Seems she is part French, Danish and her father claims “Mexican” Ancestry.

But, she is an American. No embassy in Mexico is going say “welcome home” when goes to the Mexican Riviera for fun.

She’ll fly into the airport in Cancun, the drug dogs will sniff her luggage as it’s stacked on the dolly, then take a walk inside the plane and then she will go through customs. But, first she must present herslef to customs, who will take her vdry american passport and thenask her to oush a button.

The button is a switch for a stop light. Supposedly, it randomly picks who will have their stuff inspected. Hasn’t happened to me....yet.

She’s American.

Now, Mexico was founded by some explorer from Spain?

I guess, because the language in Mexico is, primaririly, well...Spanish.

Cept for some Mayan stuff and some other languages I don’t speak.

Anyway, one wonders why all the streets and missions are named after some prominent “Spaniard” or in spanish. ? ? ? In California, Arizona, New Mexico....

The truth is Mayans and 300 indigenous tribes were here before there was a Mexico and there were hundreds of Native Americans like Cherokee, Osage, Pawnee, Pawhuska,
Chikasha, Creek, etc.

All were here before the bass turd(look up his name, from Spain) enslaved some indigenous people of what we call Mexico.

Now, how did Alta Mexico come to be?

When did Mexico gain its independence? From what country?

How many years after Mexico became a sovereign state did the “Republic of California” come into existence? Why? By whom?

Nope.

If yer from Mexico yer a Mexican and may have the blood of different ethnicities who climbed on a boat to get there.

What is an American?

The winnuh...

I watched with a diverse crowd of friends. We all groaned at the PC crap.

None of my friends consider themselves a hyphenated American.

I saw the Muslim woman with head scarf, and it jus reminded me terrorist hits are going to be more frequent in America.
We are infected with the curse of Islam. A very sad commercial.

And we believe America is Beautiful (which was their tag line) and that God Shed His Grace On Thee!” and we are happy to have Israel sing with us. It’s kind of a good message about these USA.

Then why didn't they sing it in English? I don't care if Hebrews sing America the Beautiful in Hebrew. It's a song about America not Israel.

I had no problem with the ad. My thought was that I’d love to hear it being sung for real in Tehran, Havana, and Tienanmen Square.

You protest way too much. Of course there are Mexicans of all ethnicities. But the vast majority of Mexicans are Mestizo or full blooded Indians, which kinda means that they're the descendents of American Indians. And the percentages are even higher when you're talking about Mexicans living in the United States and Mexican-Americans. So attacking Mexicans by saying that you have some sort of "right to the land" because one distant ancestor was Indian unlike them is a bit strange.

Now, Mexico was founded by some explorer from Spain?

Nope. Mexico is an Aztec word. Mexico was around long before Spain and there are a heck of a lot more descendents of Indians in Mexico than there in the United States.

Clever, but when Clemenza starts rambling on about "Asiatic and Latin Hordes" he's not talking about language, he's talking about race. And that's not something that Americans normally do, nor is it behavior normally tolerated on FR.

Define the Latin culture or the Asiatic culture without using race as part of the definition.

You can't because the whole concept is purely racial. There is no Latin or "Asiatic" (really?? We're still using that word in 2014??) culture. There are many different countries and many different largely unrelated cultures.

What race are "Latins"?

What culture are they? Practically nobody outside of the United States self identifies as "Latino."

Nope.

I’m attacking some dip sheet romanticism so called Mexican Americans have about claims to land, their dreams of a reconquista and in general. “This land belonged to Mexico....until the white man”

BS

Prior to Spaniards showing up the land belonged to tribes such as the Ohlone and many others.

They bitch about how California should be a part of Mexico again and yet NO parts of Mexico, Arizona, New Mexico, California, etc. were adiminstered under one nation, one sovereign or even one tribe.

Centralized government of what the Spaniards called “New Spain”(Mexico) was only possible under their empire and all tribes, inhabitants and people were under their sovereign jurisdiction.

So, NO, Mexico didn’t belong to the Aztecs, the Mayans, Ohlones, or any of the more than 100 tribes in what is now known as California.

Native Americans, including those south of the border only had influence over the territories they claimed and administered.

In those territories you were known by being part of a clan, band or tribe. All others were outsiders.

So, for example, the Aztecs most certainly did not control any part of California, much less, Northern Mexico.

In Mexico the Aztecs and Mayans controlled only those regions they knew of. That is; their world was only as big the territory they controlled or had warred in or visited.

They knew nothing of the California or other states and likely knew nothing of what became Texas.

In 1821 Mexico proclaimed their independence from Spain and as far as they were concerned became a sovereign state and no longer under the jurisdiction of Spain proper.

Oh, and they decided they no longer wanted to be known as “New Spain” and called the new independent country Mexico.

So, 1821 was the very first time Mexico was recorded as a the title of what would become the “United Mexican State” 3 years later.

The only time California was a part of Mexico was between the period of 1821 and 1846. That’s 25 years and even then it was not held under a complete government until 1824.

So California really was only a part of Mexico proper for only 22 years.

Even then, California was not a state but, rather, a territory or province, which they ultimately could not administer or control due to the youth of a new Mexican government.

During this period there were several skirmishes or battles against the heavey hand of the Mexican government and most of those fights were by “Proper Spaniards”.

That is, their lineage was traced solely to Spain and not some amalgamated bloodline of Spaniards and Natives.

For instance, Juan B. Alvarado, whose father traveled with Portola up and down the California coast. His father and mother were from Spain.

It should also be noted that Portola argued leaving Northern California for the Russians to administer, as they had shown up long before Spain and had solidified relations with natives in the area.

There is a fort that still stands from the Russian era.

In 1846 California proclaimed independence from Mexico and guess who masterminded that plan?

A bunch of Spanairds and some Mormon white guy. Not that Spaniards weren’t white. They still are.

So to recap:

The native or Indian tribes only controlled their territory.

There was no collective government under by these tribes to mutually administer any lands, unlike the Cherokee and Iroquois.

There is no reason to give this land back to Mexico, a land very rich in resources but, a piss poor and corrupt government.

Their total GDP last year was bit more than $1 trillion, with a population of some 120 million.

That contrasts with our erstwhile neighbors to the north, Canada, whose GDP $1.8 trillion. That’s 40% more dineros in a country of nearly 35 million people or only 70% less people than Mexico!

Canadians enjoy an average earnings of $52,219 a year in wages.

Contrast that with Mexico and their average per capita is only $9,749 per year!

What a basket case!

Canada, a country very short on resources and little arable land, is wealthy on par with that of American is due to the form of government they chose and it’s charter.

Mexico, on the other hand is a bit of a comedy of errors. It has lands rich with resources but, a government that is corrupt, beholden to or controlled Narco Cartels and just plain confused about what their future should be.

Collectively their lands are not controlled by one government or even one people under an ideal.

The Indians or Natives won’t ever be able to compete with the modern world if you were to give it back to them completely and even then “How does one go about redefining territories of the distinct tribes?”

Do we let them adminster it the way they saw their lands back in the day as Clans, Bands, or Tribes and just where was the land of their domination and further, when was that domination at its apogee.

When did their domination over a land area wither or completely disappear?

How do we or they prove a certain land area belongs to them?

We are still uncovering cities and don’t really know who they belonged and of those we do who is going to claim some right of heritage and who would they prove that?

No, they lost the battle to Spain which eventually became overstretched and could no longer administer any of the lands they “discovered” and the people no longer wanted to be under the flag of Spain any more some 200 years ago.

The Monroe Doctrine would end everything else and in 1848 California went to battle with what was left of the Mexican Army. Mexico lost and the American Army showed up 26 days later, planted their flag and the new independent Republic of California was all to happy to join the powerful nation of the United States of America.

This land belongs to you and me. So called Mexicans should give up whatever romanticized ideal they have about Mexico, because even Californians didn’t want anything to do with Mexico.

Feel free to respond and if you feel the need give citations or footnotes.

However, this land never really belonged to Mexico or any confederation of native tribes, as there was never such a thing.

And just so both of us are clear:

Mestizo is a term traditionally used in Spain and Spanish-speaking Latin America to mean a person of combined European and Native American descent.
