I want to replace my old, very gunked up Dell, and would like to have W7, if possible

I looked for a thread that addressed new computers and didn't find one, so if there IS a discussion already ... please direct me.

I run XPPro now on an old Dell that has crashed twice and reformatted, but the last time (so my guy says ... ) some of the components wouldn't run unless there was some W8 on it (which I see occasionally) .

I've looked at a WallyWorld site and an OfficeMax and new desktops (I THINK I prefer them) are in the 3 - 600 dollar range, but they all seem to have W8, which everyone says stay away from.

So what does a guy do if he wants a new 'puter?

What company and all that.

PS ... I have no idea what you mean when you start telling me I need an XYZ maxitoggle with the flimflam whizzer bugle (of COURSE I'm being facetious ... just trying to inform anyone replying I'd have to write down whatever you say and hand it to the clerk with, "My buddy said to get one of these")

I don’t know but Dell is laying off 15,000 people worldwide.

I bought an HP laptop from Walmart and have a program that makes it feel like Win 7. That said, from what I understand (I spoke with HP), they are planning a release of new ones with Win7 due to the dislike of Win8. You may want to call and check on that.
If I had not done that, I would have gone to Costco. You have 90 days to try it out. Either you end up adjusting or you return it. Sometimes, they used to have some Win7 units there. Also, you can call Best Buy to see if they have any. with Costco, though, it is nice to have the 90 days return and the double warranty.

My husband buys “ASUS” computers. He’s a network architect for a large financial-services company, so I assume he has some expertise in these things.

I don’t understand why the computers break, when I never do anything different. It pulled up Free Republican and my email yesterday, so what’s wrong with it today?

I had one centuries ago ... with a phone cradle.

IF/THEN was my very first attempt to learn programming

Unless you need Windoze, buy an iPad. No security software required. No daily software updates.

Do you want a desktop, or does it matter.
When in the US, I made my own desktops, but when I went international, a laptop was the only practical choice.
I am on the same Toshiba laptop that I bought in Slovakia in 2007. In the last few years while here in the Philippines, I took in another Toshiba laptop from a cash strapped guy. I also took in a Dell laptop from another expat that needed money. My wife and child use it. My ISP provided me with a Wi-Fi router, so we have unlimited connections to the internet.
I use an external keyboard with all laptops.

Windows 7 still available with no problem this past fall when I ordered a new desktop for my son who is taking AutoCAD in school and needed graphics horsepower.

Look at Newegg to see what you can put together. It isn’t likely that you will find Win 7 on a new machine, but you can easily build one and load it yourself. If you want a new laptop you will probably be stuck with Win 8.1. Run in classic mode, and add one of the start button programs to enhance it. My wife’s laptop is setup like that, and it works very well.

Asus is all I use for building the two desktops I keep up, and my laptop is Asus.

Nerd says to stay away from Asus. Toshiba came highly recommended. There is an Acer that is receiving interest. Google what you are looking for and then read the ratings.

Watch for Valentines Day sales. I need a new laptop too. Also, notebooks and iPads cannot replace a desktop but laptops can. I also want 7 and wifi.
What say you techies?

I’m concerned that windows will build off the 8s when it comes out with windows 9.

Think about getting a 15” or 17” laptop then adding an external 20-24 inch external monitor that connects via HDMI

Very happy with my new Dell ( bought in Japan with Windows 7 ) Inspiron desktop . Downstairs is a 10 year old Dell laptop with XP that has never presented one single problem . My daughter’s Dell is just as old and she has never had a problem with it . Just good luck ?

Agree 100%.
Mac stuff works all the time. I use my iPad for everything now.
I do have an older laptop to print from and manage iTunes, but when it’s time to replace that, a Mac will be purchased.
