I think it may just be a conditioned response to someone with a petition. If some earnest soul comes up to them with a clip board, they automatically sign, without listening to what is being said.
I wonder if they would have signed if it was Tea Party Members? Or Republicans, or Jews? (call them Zionists) Or something else. Now you can see how Hitler and the Nazis were able to murder 6 million with ease. I bet they would not have signed or even permitted someone to kill blacks, or gays, the protected minorities of our age.
