...cracked Peyton Manning's hand signal code during the Super Bowl so they were able to predict every play

The Seattle Seahawks have revealed that a good part of their defensive strategy at the Super Bowl came from the fact that they were able to decode Peyton Manning's hand signals on the field. Controversial corner back Richard Sherman said that he and his fellow defenders cracked the code that the Denver Broncos quarterback was using, meaning that they knew exactly what to expect for each play. 'We knew what route concepts they liked on different downs, so we jumped all the routes. Then we figured out the hand signals for a few of the route audibles in the first half,' he said.

Gosh, I always thought only the Patriots would do such a dastardly thing. Lol. I’m positive that everyone here is sure their team’s coach never would stoop to do what the Patriots did.

So in other words, they cheated.

Peyton Manning has ZERO,ZILCH, NADA personality. Just leave Peyton. Just don’t make Memphis your home.

The WSJ today had an excellent analysis of why Denver lost.

Essentially, it was the ability to pressure Manning without the blitz. They rushed either three or four all day. This allowed an extra linebacker, or even a lineman, to sit five yards out and wreck the pick, while at the same time preventing single coverage receivers from burning secondaries with yards after catch.

"Omaha"

Haha! He should have stuck with "OMAHA, OMAHA, OMAHA!!!" I was waiting for it but didn't here it once. And as much attention as that particular audible call received in the last few weeks, I was a little surprised the announcers didn't recognize it during the game as well.

Why would he go to Memphis? Isn’t UT (one of his likely destinations) in Knoxville?

Not one drop of cheating. If you can figure out what the guy on the field is saying (by voice or hand) then you can use it.

I think Peyton explained it as something more or less akin to “HUT!”. The offense would know which occurrence (first, second, third, ...) was the hike signal. The idea was to use the first call on non-critical downs (e.g, 2nd and 6 on your forty in the first quarter) and save the trickery for situations where it could make a difference (e. g., third and four on the opponent’s 11 in the fourth quarter).

"...while at the same time preventing single coverage receivers from burning secondaries with yards after catch."

They tackled the ball carrier and not the ball as well. Something that seems to be lost on a lot of defenses that were relegated to sitting at home and watching the game on TV.

I pointed out to Mrs. tractorman the best way to predict a play.
Just watch the running backs eyes before the snap of the ball: if the running back is looking around at the defense, he's getting the ball. If he's looking straight down, he's blocking.

Same thing with QB. If he's looking around he's throwing it. If he's looking straight ahead, he's handing off.

She calls it correct almost very time.

They figured out when his hands signaled he had possession of a hiked football, by overpowering his offensive line and forcing mistakes, they would win the game. Brilliant.

Yes. It’s allowed. There is no rule requiring the Seahawks be stupid and pretend they don’t recognize a pattern, which is what banning figuring out the signals would amount to.

“Now that doesn’t include the Patriots using hidden cameras to record the other teams practice [...] ... those things are still illegal.”

Also imaginary...both parts there.

Peyton’s wife is from Memphis. Knoxville was just a stopping point. Memphis is close to Mississippi and more family ties.

“So in other words, they cheated.”

Not by this...not hardly.

This is a basic part of the game.

Was Peyton even on the field long enough in the first half to show these signals?

Sounds awfully fishy ....this reminds me of the New England patriots spying on the opposite side during practice... Something smells there at the Seahawks camp!! NFL better look into it....Sherman’s mouth is a loose cannon, he just let the cat outta the bag....can’t believe they cracked Manning’s code on game day during each snap ...No freakin way!!

He will be like Farve. He will retire and then try to make a comeback a couple of times.

I'll disagree. It's no secret that Peyton is pretty much going will be the most coveted on-air, ex-NFL talent since Theisman. He's already prove his on-camera ease with all of his commercial appearances. If he's not part of the in-studio pregame team at whichever network “wins” him, he'll be the primary color-guy for A team right away.

With that role, he'll cement his post-playing career right from the start. Farve has yet to catch on as an on-air talent - even though he's got some commercial exposure with Wrangler jeans.

I really see Peyton as an NFL announcer/color analyst for 20+ years once he retires. I just hope he doesn't go to ESPN unless his addition causes the retirement of Chris Berman.
