Carlsbad Corn Dog Company Files for Bankruptcy (Hot Dog on a Stick)
NBC San Diego ^ | Tuesday, Feb 4, 2014 | Christina London

Carlsbad-based Hot Dog on a Stick has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the company confirmed to NBC 7.

Hot Dog on a Stick, which is often found in mall food courts, sells corn dogs, lemonade and other fair foods.

According to a news release from the company, Hot Dog on a Stick signed many of its leases during the height of the real estate bubble. As the economy declined, so did customers at shopping malls. The company said it will renegotiate leases as part of its restructuring plan.

Hot Dog on a Stick operates 93 stores in the western part of the country and Hawaii, including nine in San Diego County, according to the company’s website.

The company said it will be “business as usual” during court proceedings.

Either Obamacare or increasing the minimum wage will probably take them down. Obama is famous (or infamous) for eliminating jobs with his laser like focus.

Enjoyed their corn dogs at the mall decades ago, but noticed at some point that they switched to ‘low-fat Turkey hot dogs’ or something. I’m sorry, but that’s just wrong. A real hot dog should be made from (unidentifiable) pork and/or beef parts or byproducts.

WOW, other than the move to healthy eating, I didn’t see this coming.
Really low margin company...lemons...hot dogs...that’s about it.

They could have picked better uniforms but the food was good and always hot.

This is actually good news as it will prevent people from having uncontrolled access to easily concealable sticks with sharp pointed ends that can be used as weapons of mass whatever.

I like corn dogs with mustard but don’t think I have ever heard of that company.

The only brand which I like is Bryan’s. I tried some brand of chicken corn dogs and they were pretty bad.

Since shopping malls mostly will transition into the Sect 8 housing developments of the future, they just need to hang on a few more years.

They’re a western chain, that’s probably why.

Turkeys don’t have lips.

How can you make a hot dog without lips?

It may prevent attacks with pointed sticks, but what about if someone attacks armed with a banana?

Oh really....I never ate hotdogs on a stick...although I do like cornbread and hush puppies, and the occasional hotdog, but never together...and definitely not on a sharp object.

As the economy declined, so did customers at shopping malls. The company said it will renegotiate leases as part of its restructuring plan.

Heh, heh. Good luck with that. Malls ain't talking.

They seem to have evolved an entirely new business model: with large numbers of corporate layoffs happening, many "early retirees" are putting their life savings into the last, desperate gamble of a retail business venture. Rather than fighting with other shopping centers by offering reduced rents for good, long-term corporate tenants or strong local businesses, the malls' new strategy is to oversell these hapless neophyte entrepreneurs on the benefits of paying high rent for mythical foot traffic, get them to overcommit to leasehold improvements, collect full rent for a couple of years until the tenant's business fails, lock the tenant out, keep the improvements (and inventory if they can), sue the tenant for back rent, and re-lease the space to the next sucker in line.

It seems to be working, as even many half-empty malls are managing to make their mortgage payments and aren't being foreclosed on and forcibly converted to FEMA death camps as they deserve. :)

Also many shopping centers and malls also take a percentage of profits on top of their high rent.
