With patent laws allowing apple to patent rounded corners its almost impossible to recreate windows with stepping on a patent.

I think those kinds of patents are stupid, I bet most people do.

IBM held the original patent on "the cursor".

It’s another layer running on top of the OS, which, if you have to troubleshoot for some problem, can only get in the way. It’s like silicone implants: nice looking boobs but they aren’t real.

A few years ago, I bought a Stardock product - blinds, skins or somesuch app - installed it and it took over my desktop in a very unfriendly way. I had to rip it out root & trunk, and would not touch their stuff, ever again.

Just my own experience; your mileage may vary, and contents may settle during shipping.

The fault is that there's front-page pop culture nitwitisms on a corporate PC's welcome screen to begin with. That's partially why corporations demanded a disabling of Metro.

Your comment is double-extra dumb, so there. Hmnf!

I’ve been wondering if this OS would take off. I plan to keep a watch on this one.

Like others it has been overshadowed because it has been so quiet. It sounds like it is worthy of a live disc at least.

It is probably a security feature. Folder contents aren’t browse-able until an authenticated user initiates indexing via the click. Try turning on the indexing service. That should pre-index the folders at the system level. User authentication would then only apply to accessing the folders, rather than indexing them first before accessing them.

8.1 will take off because Server 2012 and Exchange 2013 will take off. Big, big money to be saved in this platform.

I compare Server 2012 to the significance of Server 2000 and Active Directory. And Exchange 2013 gets back to the architecture of Exchange 2003. It just took MS 10 years to make Exchange compatible with virtualization API layering but hey, it’s done so pffffft.

It’s the customer’s problem for not wanting the product and the customers are the ones that need to change?

Am I the only one that used media center?

That is one feature on Win 7 I really would like back.

Start 8 only forces boot to desktop, the only change in function is adding a start button which you can disable if you feel that is cheating. Nothing is between you and Win 8, it is literally Win 8. If you want the Metro start screen, it is still there.

I’m thinking about getting the app that lets you run metro apps in resizable desktop windows, now that is cheating, but in a good way.

I know 5 people with $750-$1100 HP lappers, who’ve thrown them away, and gone over to 27” iMac units, after many years with MS. LOL. I retrieved the lappers, got a local computer store to rip out root & trunk that Win-8 (easy to do 8 Pro, but 8 is difficult) and install Win-7 Pro x64, and all are running fine and happily, now. My office-grade HP PC is very happy with the same 7 Pro x64 OS it came with in ‘09; new HD just installed. I’m glad it works for you. I don’t know anyone who’s happy with 8, and know a lot more are bailing on it.

One question though, why does Win8.x take 10-15 seconds to see what’s in a directory?

I checked the properties of my problem directory (right click/properties). In the window that appeared I clicked the customize tab. Under "Optimize this folder for" it said "Pictures." I changed that to "General Items" after which the folder immediately showed the files like all my other folders. To test, I changed it back to pictures and it went back to the initial behavior where it would take 15 seconds for the files to appear. I don't know how that folder got set to be a pictures folder, but resetting it solved the issue for me. Doc, give that a try and report back so we know if that's the solution.

I was thrilled when I got Win 7.

After some work, I’m OK with Win 8. I miss media center but I have Win 8 operating about as well as Win 7, my biggest problem with it is that it take work to make it OK and I was looking for a big improvement like the Vista to Win 7 transition.

I honestly tried to use Win-8, on demo computers, but it fought me every step of the way. I went back to ol’ faithful Win-7 Pro, and am staying there. I don’t see any improvement over 7; it should be a touch phone/pad OS, not for PCs/lappers. JMO.

That’s fine, I have a Win 7 laptop and there is nothing that makes me want to upgrade it to Win 8.

On the other hand, I have a Win 8 laptop and with Start 8, there is nothing that makes me want to down grade either.

It’s basically a wash, my biggest problem with Win 8 is that it should have been a real upgrade, not a wash.
