I live in Bakersfield in the Central valley. Two words describe it both proceeded by the words Too many.
Too many: Taxes
Too many: Mexicans
....+1, still have the family home in Oleander/Sunset and worry when reading Victor Davis Hansen about the overrun Fresno/Clovis area. Assume the same is true with Nashville West. Used to be a conservative area, seems like downtown is now a ghost town except for govt offices. Good luck paying all the govt retirees with the unfunded state pension plans coming home to roost!

Oleander/Sunset was such a nice community. Always loved that area. When I was younger lived right at Blanche and Oleander for many years.
I can’t wait to retire and leave the hellish bastion of liberal communism and immorality that is Krapifornia. I am counting the days, despite still being years away.
The central valley is nothing special in and of itself. Add in the absolute insanity and oppression from the communist government, let alone the exorbitant taxation, you can have it.

folks who want o live in Cal, I recommend the north county in San Diego. While the city is becoming more liberal, the north county is heavily influenced by Camp Pendleton and retired military and more conservative.
If you live in a no income tax state, you will have state income tax anywhere in Cal. And the legislature has turned this into a total sanctuary state. More noticeable in LA and SF.
Excellent weather. Retirees can find something clean and good community starting at 225,000 for 2 bdr/2 bth.

Don’t know why anyone would want to live in the central valley, but to each his own.
UN Agenda 21 is working to fix that right now, to make sure you can’t move wherever you want. They want us packed into cities like San Francisco and New York.
I heard that North Carolina is having a conservative Renaissance. Has that came to a sudden end, or are you unaware of North Carolina’s conservative boom?
I grew up in LA and am glad to be out of it. California is no place to retire, folks. There is no water there. South Carolina is real nice.
We have relatives who live near the coast south of Charlotte who say the make up is changing fast. They notice it because the area was majority conservative, but quiet about it. Now the transplanted liberals from New England (especially NY and PA) are pushy outspoken and politically active in many issues, especially the advancement of environmental regulation and land takings.
Don't understand all the posters on this thread warning / complaining about a putative lack of water in California.
Are you talking about coastline and/or water recreational resources, or potable water (for drinking and/or agricultural purposes)?
To my knowledge (after quickly leafing through a Rand McNally), California has an extensive coastline, with lots of pretty beaches and - in the south - warm bathing waters. So I guess you all mean that there is a scarcity of the latter (drinking and/or agricultural purposes).
So, are people dying of thirst, or are crops suffering from drought?
Or is it a question of water prices? Surely the cost of household water is not prohibitively high.
So what's the real problem?

There is water here but there are not enough dams. That can be fixed but it could get ugly. The Auburn dam comes to mind.
One nice thing about living in the center of California is that you are always a short drive from the coast (Monterrey) or the mountains (Yosemite, Mineral King). The author was making a case for retirees coming here by stressing the expansion of healthcare facilities.

Wow, thanks for this info! We have been looking in Carlsbad, made an offer on a place recently in Calico Bluffs that we lost to a competing all cash offer. Very painful! Trying to find the next opportunity.
We’ve investigated various areas thoroughly and thought that for a conservative who wants good west coast weather this is the place to be. Absolutely love it there - the beach culture and landscape fits us perfectly.

Last time I was there it was literally a garbage dump for the lazy lefties that won’t carry their own trash out.
California is loaded with money.
