One Anne Arundel County, Md., police officer devastated a family on Saturday when he shot and killed their dog while investigating a burglary in the Pasadena area, reported Monday's Baltimore Sun.
On Saturday afternoon, the deceased dog's guardian, Tim Reeves, was alerted to the presence of an officer in his front yard by his girlfriend.
He went to the door to see what the problem was; Reeves told the Baltimore Sun:
I said to him 'How can I help you, officer?
He looked at me and said 'I unloaded on your dog. Your dog attacked me, and I killed it.'"
The one year veteran of the force killed "Vern," a Chesapeake Bay retriever, who barked at the intruder who had entered his yard.
According to Vern's guardians, the officer was walking through yards in the neighborhood, hoping to interview someone about the burglary; Vern's guardians were not involved in the burglary investigation.

Why was he walking through yards? Don’t people in Anne Arundel have front doors? Telephones?
A wise person once posted on this forum that nothing can’t be made worse by involving the police. I think of that every time I read one of these stories. In this story alone there is one officer showing contempt for private property, living beings and fellow members of their “community”. Disgusting.
Why are they referring to the dog owner as a dog guardian? Liberal BS.
I hope the cop is sued for deprivation of property under color of law or something. Stupid cop.

I would probably try and find other victims of this cop and sue him individually. Let hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs come out of this department for this one idiot cop.
Somebody with computer skills should start up a website that keeps track of dogs killed by cops. It might cause some hesitation on their part if every department had to fend off a half-dozen lawsuits or more every time a dog was killed.

It is extremely effective on dogs. Probably more effective than a gunshot at least for a few seconds.

When was the last time a cop was killed by a dog in the United States? How often are cops seriously injured by dogs?
Conversely, how many family pets are shot and killed by cops every year?
