EAGLES MERE A popular winter attraction in Sullivan County is back on after a two year hiatus.
The ice toboggan slide in Eagles Mere is up and running and Friday night fans came out in droves for ride.
Flying at neck-braking speeds, feeling icy winds slap your face, the ice toboggan slide in Eagles Mere is simply a pure adrenaline rush.
Most amazing thing in the world, said Elizabeth Decherney of Eagles Mere.
Im like freaking out about going on it but thats just because Im a worrier, said Tori Garcia, who was up from Virginia visiting her grandmother.
The ice toboggan slide is open for business once again after the two previous winter seasons were too warm for it to be built.
Toboggan after toboggan slid rapidly down the chute then rocketed out onto the lake below.
Its a total rush and then when you hit the bottom you go superfast and fly out across the lake, its awesome, said Decherney.
It was pretty awesome, it was fast and cold, it was a good time, said Chris Carichaner of Tunkhannock.
I wasnt really wasnt all that afraid the first time I went on but now I am kind of nervous, said 8-year old Anna Kipp from New Albany.
But even amid this polar vortex, the volunteers who make the slide say they werent sure if it would be a go.
The slide weighs 240,000 pounds so the lake needs at least 12 inches of ice on top to be safe and strong enough to hold it.
The lake just wouldnt freeze, every time wed get a little bit of a freeze on it, wed get a rain and itd really warm up, said Michael Morris, one of the ice slides board members.
The recent weeks of below freezing temperatures did the trick.
But then this weeks snow added additional weight on the lake, causing breaks in the ice after water flooded over the top.
The snow weighs down on the lake and it pushes down and what you do is get little ice holes that open up to release the pressure and then obviously you see where the clear ice is out there it flooded out, said Morris.
But everything still came together, which is very great since this the largest fundraiser for the boroughs fire department.
$25 gets you a toboggan that seats up to five for one hour with two trips down the slide guaranteed.
The ice slide will be open Saturday, February 8th and Sunday February 9th.
Weather permitted it will be open the following weekend, Friday through Sunday.
Hours: Friday 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Saturday 10 am to 8 pm
Sunday 10 am to 6 pm
The slide will stop accepting riders one hour before closing.
Oh my! Spent a summer working at the Crestmont Inn! Best summer of my life.
Yeah.
Don't "brake" your neck.
Sponsored by the Trail Lawyers Association.
Quite possibly. Bit it still sounds like wicked fun. :)
impossible! According to the Ski magazine article in the NY Slimes Mag on Drudge, it is now “The End of Snow” due to glowbull warming.
...neck-braking speeds....

Ack! If I have to brake with my neck, I’m not doing it.
I think this doofus meant to say “break-neck speeds”.
Was in college when they tore it down. Cried my heart out :(
Eagles Mere is in good hands. More money than one could imagine cradles it like a baby.
Just a great place. Best time to go is in the fall.
When I worked there in 1972 the Crestmont was run by Christian Scientists and the clientele were also mostly CS’s. The Fife family owned it at the time. Lovely people. We went up in the winter and stayed in their log cabin which was beautiful. IIRC, Pat Boone had a place nearby. Haven’t been back since 73 and would love to visit again.
Is the Sweet Shop still there? Lots of hot fudge sundae’s consumed on our off hours. It was a magical summer right after graduating HS.
I haven’t been back there in years, but I do know that the Sweet Shop is still there.
People don’t realize the wealth that used to come in and out of that place back in the day - usually on private railroad cars.
I used to play a lot of golf there. There was a par 3 that looked straight down hill - cut into the side of the mountain. One day we drive up to the tee box and look down and there’s a black bear laying on it’s back sunning herself on the green.
We had to skip the hole. She wouldn’t move.
