Copenhagen Zoo met with online rage after putting down healthy giraffe to stop inbreeding

Copenhagen Zoo killed a 2-year-old giraffe and fed its remains to lions as visitors watched, ignoring a petition signed by thousands and offers from other zoos and a private individual to save the animal.

Marius, a healthy male, was put down Sunday using a bolt pistol, said zoo spokesman Tobias Stenbaek Bro. Visitors, including children, were invited to watch while the giraffe was then skinned and fed to the lions.

Marius' plight triggered a wave of online protests and renewed debate about the conditions of zoo animals. Before the giraffe was killed, an online petition to save it had received more than 20,000 signatures.

But the public feeding of Marius' remains to the lions was popular at Copenhagen Zoo. Stenbaek Bro said it allowed parents to decide whether their children should watch what the zoo regards as an important display of scientific knowledge about animals.

Can we assume they called every other zoo in Europe first to make sure they didn’t want the thing?

Better yet did anyone call every other zoo and ask if they have done the same thing.

A British Zoo had offered to take the giraffe, but they said “No.”

The article states that TWO zoos offered to take the animal. A private citizen offer $680,000 to take the animal. IMHO, the zoo did what it wanted to do. I think it is horrid on many levels especially if other zoos would have taken him.

Jeffrey Dahmer was part Danish. I am guessing one of his relatives works at this zoo.

Matter of fact, they said that the British zoo couldn’t provide a “good enough home”. So the poor giraffe is better off dead than with a home the snooty Copenhagen hypocrites declare deficient? THEY are deficient. Of brains or compassion. If they were dissected in front of the kids, one would find an empty cranium and thoracic cavity.

Couldn’t they have just gelded the giraffe? That would pretty much solve any issues with future breeding.

They don’t value human life too much in Copenhagen....makes sense they value animal life even less.

And how humane is it to have a bolt driven into your brain? It might smart.

Hum...a friend of mine said that he and his wife lost a whole night of sleep once over a calf...a calf...I suggested that they look at the bright side, they now had some Prime Veal on their hands....Haven’t heard from them in a while. While life gives you....

Visitors, including children, were invited to watch while the giraffe was then skinned and fed to the lions.

So he's alive one minute and they then butcher him in front of a crowd of stunned children feeding him to the lions.

What a wonderful day at the zoo!!!

Pretty humane. By the time you’d feel the bolt, you’d already be dead.

“Copenhagen Zoo doesn’t give giraffes contraceptives or castrate them because that could have unwanted side effects on their internal organs, and the zoo regards parental care as important, said Holst.”

Why didn’t they just trade the healthy giraffe for something else? Seems a drastic measure to kill a healthy zoo animal.
