Kids Read to Cats With the "Book Buddies Program" [w/pix]
I Can Has Cheezburger? ^

Posted on 02/11/2014 9:01:45 PM PST by Slings and Arrows

The Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Berks County, PA have started the "Book Buddies" program that brings children together with shelter cats that need companionship and provides the kids a furry friend to read to.

Children in grades 1-8 who are able to read at any level may come into the shelter to read to the cats in our adoption room. Similar programs at other shelters across the country have seen the benefits the program has to offer. The program will help children improve their reading skills while also helping the shelter animals. Cats find the rhythmic sound of a voice very comforting and soothing.

The first photo with the boy and the Orange tabby looks like a Norman Rockwell portrait.

Slings.. that picture is adorable! The little boy’s face and the kitty’s face are so serene. Beautiful! If that was my little boy, we’d have an orange cat in the house as soon as the application went through. Hugs!

I stopped reading to my cat when I discovered she wasn't listening to a word I said.......

As far as companionship, whenever I leave the house I just turn the tv on and give her the remote.......

Oh, he loves the sound, he’s trying to help. When he could see well, he used to put his paw on hub’s tools, like a wrench, when he’s working. He’s human inside (more than many humans, I may add).

He and his sister are blind now, his sister is about 100%, it’s been gradual; he’s almost blind but has some sight, hard to tell how much. They were offspring of cats dropped off in the woods around here; irresponsible subhumans let their cats breed indiscriminately and a recessive gene caused the blindness. That’s what the vet said.

They get around very well as long as we don’t move things around too much.

Mine don’t want to read. They want lubs. Lots of lubs.

Wonderful pictures! My favorite is the one at the top of the thread. Kitteh looks almost relaxed enough to fall asleep.

Maybe the cats actually like the soft tone and gentle cadence of the kids’ reading voices.

When my kids were young, we volunteered at the local no-kill shelter. They were volunteer cat-petters. We’d go a couple times a month, and they’d pet/play with the cats while I did other work around the shelter. It helped keep the cats used to children and more adoptable.
