Kids Read to Cats With the "Book Buddies Program" [w/pix]
I Can Has Cheezburger? ^

Posted on 02/11/2014 9:01:45 PM PST by Slings and Arrows

The Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Berks County, PA have started the "Book Buddies" program that brings children together with shelter cats that need companionship and provides the kids a furry friend to read to.

Children in grades 1-8 who are able to read at any level may come into the shelter to read to the cats in our adoption room. Similar programs at other shelters across the country have seen the benefits the program has to offer. The program will help children improve their reading skills while also helping the shelter animals. Cats find the rhythmic sound of a voice very comforting and soothing.

What a great way for kids to practice reading. They are learning and don't even realize it.

I wonder if the kids ever finish the book?

I’ve learned to do all of those things while reading. My cats don’t take “no” for an answer.

Slings, I don’t know if Fred is on your list - but FN - this looks good!

I don’t read to my cats but I do sing and play guitar for them and they love it. One tries to climb up on my lap and puts his wapka (paw) on the strings. He always does that. Or sometimes they just sit around my feet and close their eyes.

Utterly shameless. :)

I'm here! I've taught mine to read. She sits in front of the screen most of the time I'm on FR. Next, I'm going to join her up and make her the first kitteh-freeper! Of course she's learning how to use the keyboard, why else would she be walking all over it? I've got a special brush I use to sweep the dear, sweet little darling's hair out from between the keys.

I've been teaching her to get her own dinner, too.
