My Grandfather was around during Cobb’s and Ruth’s day. Many sportswriters of that era NEVER voted for a guy, the first few times he was eligible. It was also a popularity contest, as well. I can understand Cobb, he had a mean streak; Ruth, on the other hand, was beloved.
Cobb hated Ruth because the fans liked him more than they liked Cobb. Cobb was a great player, but had a chip on his shoulder and had a hard time getting along with anyone.
