Earthquake Central SC, felt from Lexington to Elgin

I haven't felt an earthquake in decades but just experienced a small one here in SC. My grandparents in Elgin, over 70 miles away, also felt and heard it.

I haven't seen any news about it yet, but it couldn't have been much more than a 3.0.

Two winter storms and an earthquake in less than 10 days. Hmmmm.

The is a small, but serious, earthquake fault line in Charleston. It more or less runs along the line of Charleston harbor and the Cooper River. It this an extension of that fault line or a previously unknown fault?

I don’t think this is the Charleston fault line but I’m not 100% certain on that. The largest quake in this area according to the USGS was a 5.something and the fault in Charleston obviously has had larger quakes.

The USGS says the state’s geology office has the info on the specific fault line for last night’s quake. Given that the quake occurred near the Savannah River nuclear plant I’m sure the fault is known to those who follow such things, but the identity isn’t widely known to the population.

Thanks. My father, who lived outside Charleston, always had earthquake insurance. Only a matter of time.

I was in Beautiful Beaufort for a quake in the early 60’s. I slept through it. I’ve also slept through hurricanes.

That would be the Sylmar quake, 1971. It was a 6.6. I almost slept through that one as well, but it was right at my normal wake up time. I was in the City of Orange, dreamed I drove my car off the road and that’s why everything was shaking!

I was reminded of this bit from the Anamaniacs.

Ah, the Northridge ‘quake.

I had a cousin sleep through it, one mile from the epicenter, in the top bunk.
