Wouldn’t mind it a bit. Jesse was portrayed as old and ugly as well as mean. The press didn’t have to try too hard. Cruz is a good looking fella.

Hell naw. Helms was a legend. I remember his epic campaign against the token black candidate, that all the leftist NY Times media swooned over. That ad of his with the guy crumpling those papers caused liberal’s heads to explode louder than Nagasaki.

I say no way.

Will be interested to see people’s responses however.

Cruz in my opinion is potentially the leader/co-leader of a renewed GOP. Or perhaps a renewed conservative party, outside the GOP.

The GOP is more disappointing, by the day.

Helms considered Biden to be his buddy. He would get misty eyed and all bipartisan over Joe. Other than that, he was great.

Jesse Helms was a hero as well. He paved the way for Ronald Reagan and got better the longer he stayed in the U.S. Senate.

More often than not, Republicans who sell themselves to voters by invoking conservative principles wind up catching Potomac fever once they arrive in Washington--think Orrin Hatch, Marco Rubio, Jeff Flake, and so on.

They're all buddies in the Senate.

Did Helms hang out with him or personally like him?

Yep. And of that group you named, Orrin Hatch actually lasted the longest. I was a young man when he was first elected and he often allied with Senator Helms, sort of like a Mike Lee to today's Ted Cruz.

Sometime in the mid 1990s, he fell in love with Bill Clinton and decided being the "gentleman of the U.S. Senate" was more important than representing his constituents.

Helms was one of a handful who held his ground until the day he retired.

WE have seen Ted Cruz KNEELING in prayer in the front of the White House.

We have seen Ted Cruz STANDING all night, and all alone against Obamacare.

WE have seen Ted Cruz SITTING, while others applauded revealing their soullessness, and utter contempt for the American people.

In each instance Ted Cruz was alone in his statesmanship decorum.

TRUTH in a decadent day usually stands alone.

Those who are standing, and applauding are what our founders feared.

Ted Cruz is what our founders dreamed of.

Jesse Helms is back....and this time, he’s Hispanic!

adapted from “Jesse Helms is back....and this time, he’s black” - said of Vernon Robinson, who ran for Congress unsuccessfully several times.

I think Ted Cruz is the modern LBJ--NOT in terms of ideology, but in terms of style, a paradoxical combination of hard-nosed grit and down-home likeability. My impression, in terms of image, is that Rand Paul is confrontational without being particularly likeable, and Mike Lee is likeable without being particularly confrontational, but Cruz is the closest thing to a perfect balance of both--as was Ronald Reagan in his day.

No. In short, Helms had a plan (whether you agreed with it or not). He was always working to that end goal. Cruz just rolls grenades in a room. While I’m all about shaking things up, that’s all he’s about. He’s not a leader and has no plan short of the moment. I know it is not the majority opinion here, but I am singularly unimpressed with Cruz. He’s way too frat-boy.

Sen. Jesse Helms photo SenJesseHelms.jpg "...He (Helms) was always working to that end goal..." Yes, and he was a master parliamentarian who could use procedure rules to tie his opposition in knots. Helms was the most conservative man in the Senate and yet managed to get reelected time and again in the least conservative Old South state. The 1984 Senate race matched the two-term Helms vs. the two-term Governor Jim Hunt. Hunt was favored but Helms won with the help of strategy masters Tom Ellis and Carter Wrenn and the strong Reagan reelection campaign. That NC Senate race was the most expensive in US history up to that time even over those in more populous states.
