Running Back Jennifer Welter Makes History By Playing In Pro Football Game

Football history was made rather quietly over the weekend in Texas.

During an Indoor Football League game between the Texas Revolution and the North Texas Crunch, 36-year-old Jennifer Welter got three carries, making her the first woman to play a non-kicking position in a pro football league.

Welter, who has starred at linebacker for a decade for the Dallas Diamonds of the Women's Football Alliance, got her first carry midway through the third quarter. She took a handoff from two yards out of the end zone and scampered around the left tackle. But the 5-foot-2, 130 pound Welter was met by 6-4, 245-pound defensive lineman Cedric Hearvey for a one-yard loss.

Somehow, Welter was unfazed by the hit.

"I said, 'Is that all you got?'" Welter asked Hearvey. "I didn't want them to think I was intimidated."

Maybe Tim Tebow should go play for the Dallas Diamonds in the Women’s League...What’s the difference????

I remember being 185# to 200# playing. Anybody less than 165# was barely noticed.

Maybe you should try it first.

When you can't handle it, then MAYBE Tim will decide there might actually be a challenge.

I watched the video at the website. The one thing that stood out to me was there were a lot of fans dressed up as empty seats in that arena. This level of arena football struggles to bring fans to games. This was likely a stunt meant to put butts in the seats. Football is damn a religion in Texas. The fact that this arena was mostly empty speaks volumes about the quality of football being played at this level. Calling it professional football is a stretch.

I went to a Arena Football game in the late '80's. It was entertaining...but...

For a person who likes to go to sporting events and yell and root for a team, it was a great time. But it just lacked the intensity or professionalism of a college or pro football game.

Actually, it reminded me of the semi pro's, just indoors.

Richard Petty's response when asked about Danika Patrick racing NASCAR

Yep, that's been the water cooler talk around here for a fair bit. Talk about a tempest in teapot. What's NOT being mentioned is that he said that he thinks Danica is good for the sport because she puts butts in seats. Figure that NASCAR is a business, just like any other one, and Richard wants to make his piece of the pie, too.

Mom knows Richard Petty pretty well. She says he's a fine man and an all around good guy. That's good enough for me.

And FWIW, I think he's right. If Danica was named "Daniel Patrick", he'd be the fastest racer at the local blue-ribbon county fair 1/3-mile dirt track. And, that's probably about it.

I was involved, last week, on a Yahoo article, about what King Richard said.
Here is a link to Danica's "accomplishment's"

http://racing-reference.info/driver/Danica_Patrick

Accomplishment would be a stretch of the word for her. If she didn't look better in a bikini, than any of the other drivers, she wouldn't be in a race car.

What's amazing was the defenders she had. People actually said she was as good as the other drivers out there. EVEN when you'd show them the facts.

It's just a muscle suit, Danica is not muscle bound:

You took me wrong...or maybe I worded it incorrectly...I meant Tim wants to play....If a woman can play a man’s game, then a man should be able to play on a womens team....
Let’s open all sports to either sex and see who gets the money....

(BTW, I did play at the college level and coached both college and high school football....)

NOW your meaning comes across.

I have played with a few players who were all conference players or the best at their colleges, who got invites to combines or at least "looks" by teams. When these guys say they knew they were out classed just walking on the field, it gave me a new appreciation for the pro's.

Every year approximately 3500 div 1 or 2 players graduate and are "eligible" for the draft. About 254 are drafted. Of those drafted about 30-50 (maybe) actually make a team in one form or another. The average NFL career is 4 years. That means for every player like Peyton Manning there are numerous players who make the pros by their finger nails and are gone in a year or 2.

Tim Tebow catches a lot of flak. Most of these people don't have a clue as to how good an athlete even the lowest player on a team is. Tebow at least made the pros for a short while and was a starter.

I was at the Denver v Detroit game a few years back and thought Tebow was out of his element.

I would love to see him play at another position, if possible. (Just to make it in the NFL at ONE position is an accomplishment. To be considered able to play another says a lot about ones athleticism)

I encourage every American who thinks women can cut it in the infantry or Special Forces to watch the three video clips at this website. She could have been killed. Each hit was worse than the one before. And, come to think of it, her team set her up to score (affirmative action) and she failed.

Why doesn't she play in the Lingerie Football League? I find that league entertaining sometimes.
