Still unknown if woman killed by Bastrop deputy was armed Sheriff's office won't release 911 calls, video in officer-involved shooting

BASTROP COUNTY, Texas -- A modest house in Bastrop is now missing the person who made it home, Yvette Smith.

"She was strong hearted, you know," said Anthony Bell, speaking of his mother. "Loving and caring, would do anything for her children. She worked three jobs if she had to. If you needed anything, she was willing to give you whatever she had."

Just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Bastrop County sheriffs were called to a home on Zimmerman Avenue. The caller said two men, who KVUE News has learned are father and son, were fighting over a gun.

When deputies arrived, one of the men was outside. The other was inside. Smith came to the door and was shot by 28-year-old Deputy Daniel Willis. She was taken to the hospital, where she died.

Initially, investigators said Smith had a gun and didn't follow the deputy's commands. Hours later, they retracted that statement saying they don't know if Smith had a gun.

The home owner and neighbors said she did not.

"This is a big tragedy for everybody, because, I mean, we feel unsafe now. I mean, an officer shot somebody without the person being armed," said neighbor Joe Martinez. "It just hurts, because now you can't trust an officer here."

*****

The Texas Rangers and Bastrop County Sheriff's Office are investigating the shooting.

Investigators revealing facts to the media, when they had no facts?

No bias here....

What will be interesting is what made them change their minds?

Hopefully we’ll find out in due course.

It seems answering your front door is now “suspicious” and “threatening” behavior.

I disagree with half of your tagline. I agree that everyone should pay taxes. However, I do believe that some progression should be built into the tax brackets.

Thar's all. She just came to the door.

No. No progression. A 9% tax on every dollar earned. No exemptions. No deductions. No surcharges. It is not onerous and will surely raise more money than the present system because it would be utterly predictable and is not onerous. The more money part is its drawback. It will give the government more and more money.

And we all know what happened at that door, we were all there.

How fascinating that the officers lying about the gun doesn’t faze you, yet without evidence, you suggest you believe she may have deserved to be shot.

Why are you willing to defend known liars?

When I was in the seventh grade I wrote an essay in my civics class promoting a flat rate income tax. I think I said about 12 or 13 percent. I got an “A” from my favorite teacher, J.B. Childs. For perspective, that was a long time ago, in the 50’s, when we still had 90% top tax rates, if I remember correctly.

Today, when I see the salaries paid to actors, corporate executives, sports figures, and recently even public school administrators and compare them to the entry level pay of places like Walmart, there is a disparity that is way too large. That’s why I believe in a very moderate progessive rate, but certainly not to approach 90%. Maybe 40%. On the other end, the current situation of half of the population paying zero, or even receiving a refund when paying nothing is wrong. All should pay some tax.

When the government judges what is appropriate income then it will judge and rearrange eventually all income, not to make it equal but to own and control all income and assets. That is what we are getting right now with obamacare. Is that Hollywood star’s income hurting your situation? Is this really a zero sum economy? How is your life enhanced by taking his for the government to use? Do you base your own self estimation against a movie or sports star’s income relative to yours?

"This is a big tragedy for everybody,

Including the local taxpayers, who will, in the end, foot the multimillion dollar settlement.

These tragedies never affect the LEOs in any way that really, REALLY hurts.

These bums ought to end up paying personally, out of their salary and pensions, and ought to spend time in the slammer for negligent manslaughter.

Why progression in taxes? Progressive tax is a plank in the communist manifesto.

Income, race, height, weight, IQ, age, genetic makeup,... all of those and more need more of 0bama’s laser like focus on being equalized. I don’t know why we keep fighting it.

There are a lot of questions one would ask about this. Did they talk to the one man who was outside? Obviously if one of the men is outside and one inside they are not fighting at that time, right?

Is the woman the person who called the cops? And when they arrive and she goes to let them in they shot her dead?

Were they going to shoot whoever opened the door?

This is really quite a story.
