US nun, 84, jailed for nuke protest
The Belfest Telegraph / AP ^ | 19 February 2014 | AP

An 84-year-old nun was sentenced to nearly three years in prison for breaking into a US nuclear weapons complex and defacing a bunker holding bomb-grade uranium, a demonstration that exposed serious security flaws.

Two other activists who broke into the facility with Megan Rice were sentenced to more than five years in prison yesterday, in part because they had much longer criminal histories of mostly non-violent civil disobedience...

...On July 28, 2012, the three activists cut through three fences before reaching a 548 million dollar (£328 million) storage bunker...

...They hung banners, strung crime-scene tape and hammered off a small chunk of the fortress-like Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility inside the most secure part of complex...

...When security finally arrived, guards found the three activists singing and offering to break bread with them. The protesters reportedly also offered to share a Bible, candles and white roses with the guards...

Where they were at the use of deadly force was authorized. Back before the dumbing down of D.O.E. security it could have very well been applied. Glad they all got prison time & it needed to be more. They have “AMPLE” room to protest at the gates of these facilities.

That is all true. No sympathy for them from me. DOD/DOD security needs to get their at together at the plants. Fire the security contractors and put troops in charge of facility security. This is case where it is warranted to do so.

It’s troublesome that they weren’t even caught till down there. It might not be nuns the next time. Although one hopes it is robustly enough constructed that something like nuns with hammers cannot cause more than cosmetic damage.

Put troops in charge of security rather than low bid contractors.

When one thinks of the worst that someone might do down there... well I’d hate to mention it because why should I let some terrorist, or someone intentionally kookier than these nuns, use my brain.

I think the nuns probably did us a favor by proving this possible. Maybe a monastery for military monks could be erected on the site. Praise the Lord and pass the machine gun, brother.

I live close down wind of that and all the other Oak Ridge facilities. They were associated with a group that's done similar stunts elsewhere. Someone would have had to have given them enough information to know where to cut the fences & enter at to get to where they did.

They in a sick way may have done us a favor in exposing the laxness but by using their supporters logic a bank robber should be rewarded for showing a banks security flaws. There is a migration several times a year of protesters at the plants {There are multiple plants}. Each year they push the envelope a little bit more. Each year their supporters Boo Hoo about their mistreatment which is usually an hour or two in Anderson County Jail if they keep pushing the issue. This time they pushed too far and a crack down is needed.

I remember when the Soviet Union was breaking apart and people were worried about securing their nuclear arsenal...

It sure didn’t look like the work of a scheming brilliant mastermind here. It was brute force (inasmuch as nuns with bolt cutters could be called force) and it worked.

Is that commercial even on anymore? Seems to have disappeared already. But then, I don’t watch much live TV, and the recorded commercials get forwarded through....

I think you might want to do some more reading on the others involved and the association with I think it's called "Swords to plow shears". This was more than simply a Nun with bolt cutters. There isn't signs that say processing building here. Nor are the buildings involved visible to the public.

A good chunk of the city of Oak Ridge is DOD/DOE land with one road closed to the public after 9/11 running the length of the city itself. This was just one of several facilities involved in national security. The only visible facilities are a few administrative ones located in the non fenced areas like Warehouse road. The National Lab was also once partially visible on now closed to the public Bethel Valley Road but parts of it were open to the public at one time IIRC. These facilities are several miles apart from each other. Someone had to tell them which building was which.
