Proposal to divide California into 6 states moves step closer to voter consideration

LOS ANGELES — California has reached the breaking point. Or so says Tim Draper, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist who is pushing a proposal to crack the nation's most populous state into pieces.

Six of them, in this case.

California has grown so big, so divided, it's essentially ungovernable, according to a ballot initiative that could reach voters in November.

It has to go.

"Vast parts of our state are poorly served by a representative government," according to Draper's plan, which cleared a key government hurdle this week to qualify for the ballot. California residents "would be better served by six smaller state governments."

No one would dispute that California, home to 38 million people, is full of rivalries and squabbling. Dodgers or Giants. Tacos or sushi. Where water goes, and how much of it.

But the state has proven reliably resilient against attempts to split it apart, dating to the era of its founding in 1850. Over the years, proposals have suggested California should be two states, or three, or four.

They’ll pick up electoral votes by splitting up other states.

Well, Tim Draper, the proponent, received approval from the state to begin collecting petition signatures to qualify the proposal for the ballot — he needs about 808,000 by mid-July 2014 to make the cut.

I’m not sure 10 more senators from California is a good idea.

Remove the Bay Area, and Cailfornia is more conservative than people think

I would support it. Looks like all the San Fran crazies are bunched up in one state and would probably result in 3 republican leaning states and 3 rat dominated states. This is very much a silicon valley play though as it looks like they want to separate from the rest of Kalifornia and make that their own little play ground.

The problem with something like this is the devil is in the details, for example how do you allocate the state pension funds and responsibility for paying all those fat pensioners? And does everyone start off with the same set of laws or is the slate wiped clean and newly elected representatives have to rush to create new laws. Or how about the state constitution for each of these and who is going to write them? Also I don’t see any of the new states except for the SV one being economically viable enough to stand on their own.

All that said I’d vote for it anyway just to be able to sit and watch the disaster unfold right in front of me, just need to practice up on my zombie Apocalypse a little to be fully prepared ;)

The way the map is drawn up to four of the new states
would likely be more conservative than liberal.

You’re forgetting that the reason Boxer gets elected — the San Francisco Bay area and Los Angeles with their concentrations of committed leftists and low-information voters on the ‘Rat plantation, respectively — will only be influencing senatorial elections in two of the proposed six states.

I think the design was supposed to make this feasible to get through Congress by creating two reliably “blue” states, two reliably “red” states and two toss-ups. I’m not sure it succeeds, I think it looks like three reliably “blue”, two reliably “red” and one toss-up, but even that would keep the status quo in the Senate and would be a big plus in Presidential elections.

It’s not too big, it’s too liberal. Wouldn’t most of the created states still be Democrat-controlled? If so, then wouldn’t even more liberal senators be going to DC?

This nonsense has been around before. Before, it was a divide into two states.

This AIN'T gonna happen. Think of trying to add MORE stars to the flag; think of the added congressmen and senators. Way not practical or necessary. It is ALL just hot air blowing from giant GAS bags.

So, instead of two Senators, California would send twelve to Congress. Eight of those would be Dems, maybe four Pubbies. You like adding four more Rats to work with Obama? Then of course Dem planners would see the smaller geographic bastions to turn and in a few years all twelve would be Dems. You still like this idea?

Of course this whole exercise is bogus. Cannot happen without other State's approval and Cali would never get it.
