What Recovery? Sbarro Pizza Joint Closing 155 Stores Across North America
libertynews.com ^ | 02/22/2014 | Eric Odom

If you spend a lot of time watching government (taxpayer) subsidized media you’ll find they’re working overtime to convince us all the economy is recovering. What they refuse to show is stories like this:

Sbarro, the Italian restaurant chain that’s a fixture in mall food courts, is closing 155 of its locations in North America in an attempt to improve the company’s profitability.

The move is part of a broader plan to boost financial performance under a new management team, according to a statement yesterday. The closings affect underperforming company-owned stores and not franchise locations, Sbarro said.

The chain, based in Melville, New York, is still trying to rebound after emerging from bankruptcy in 2011. Sbarro’s restaurants are concentrated in malls, where slowing traffic and muted consumer spending has taken a toll on food courts.

maybe it’s because they couldn’t sell a large enough soda to wash down the grease?

There should be no concern or sorrow expressed here. They are now free from the dreaded “job lock” by Clown Prince nobama. Soon we will see the poetry they are creating, the novels they have written and hear the zither music they are playing. Oh, to be so free... Heaven on earth, I’d say. All praise Clown Prince nobama, the all-seeing and all-knowing.

They did in a pinch. I hate to see any business go under, except those that supported Obama.

I went to Sbarro’s last night. I asked if they are safe and they are…Thank God! Of course in Maryland, you have to stand in line for a while to get your food so of course I should have known it was safe, but having acknowledgement is great. What is funny is that in Annapolis Mall, we have two of them…one in the food court and one in a sit down type all within the same place. Funny that both will survive. I feel bad for the areas that aren’t making it. I wonder what these cities and states need to do to recover.

I much prefer their spaghetti and meatballs over their pizza.

That’s a weird topping. ;-)

A McDonald's in a mall near me closed recently. The story was that McDonald's could no longer make the rent — allegedly around $15,000 a month. That's a lot of money for a cubby hole in a food court.

Now they'll jack up the rent on the ones that remain to make up for the loss.

Is that some kind of state law, rule or regulation?
What if there's no line ahead of you? Do you just stand there and not order until some one gets behind you and creates a line?

That’s true, but is there any less healthy fast food out there?

Sounds like what happened to my coffee purveyor about 20 years ago. They had quite a brisk business selling all things coffee and tea, along with the passion and know-how to maximize the products purchased. The mall where they were located upped their rent to the point of unsustainability. The shop shut down and started selling their product online and out of the storefront of their roasting location. They haven’t looked back since. I still get my coffee from them and it is wonderful. :)

"Dominos has improved."

I agree. I used to get their thin crust, but have switched to their hand-tossed crust. Much better.

Should have had the sushi
= = = = = = = =
Nah, Sushi better at an old ‘one pump’ gas station that sells bait.

Three chores completed in one stop....

I always ‘cringe’ when a place is selling food and has a sign ‘live bait’ in the same area...I know, probably nothing wrong, just the point.

I got gas early one morning and the sandwich truck had just pulled in and taken the fresh(?) sandwiches and put them in the display case.

Took a whiz - filthy head -, the check out clerk was wearing a ‘dirtyish one piece white garment’ and looked unkempt.

The place was SO bad that I virtually took the sandwich from the delivery guy and by the time I got to the counter I had put it back....COULDN’T eat the darn thing knowing it was ‘ok’ WELL, in comparison to the surroundings.

Mostly, it is all in the presentation.

Good rule of thumb is a filthy head in a relatively quiet restaurant.....Not a good idea to eat there as if they have basically no or few customers and can’t keep the head clean, what does the kitchen look like — AND, we can’t go in there.
