1940s filmmakers knew that if Hitler were alive today, he'd use an iPad.

That actor seems to have built his career on playing disliked, unrelenting, anal retentive, bureaucratic jerks.

Here’s a measure of how good he is at it. In the movie “Real Genius”, the audience is beckoned to dislike Kent, the competing student who sabotages the protagonist’s experiment. But even as despicable as he was, he ends up having an ersatz experience with the Son of God, and it is the professor played by Atherton whom we all gratifyingly watched have his house fill up with popcorn (and he was allergic to popcorn). Yup. Atherton plays a real good “bad guy”.

Moore is in some flick where Lisa Kudrow lets him die rather than give him his inhaler. Good for a laugh.

Ben Stiller. His parents were hillarious in the day.

I can honestly say I’ve never liked a single movie Sandler’s ever made including the two you mentioned.

Shakes the Clown

Ronny Cox is the conscience of the group in Deliverance. After that...meh.

I agree completely. Had it not been for Babylon 5, DS9 would likely have drifted off into mediocrity. Amazing what competition can do, no? :-)

I agree with you on Wesley Crusher - another character that deserved a horrible screeching death. He and Jar Jar needed to meet in a parallel universe and be killed in a gruesome and ultimately satisfying way.

Well, it’s a bit contrived, and probably wrong and mostly exageration of mine, but the wreckage of her marriage to Jack Ryan turned into losing an election... Yes, I know it’s far fetched, and kind of sleazy from me, but no Jeri Ryan, then (maybe) no Barry in Illinois’ senate.

Ray Liotta in any movie.

Sean Penn in every movie.

Edward Norton, Jr. He’s just scary.

Their divorce records were sealed. One of the Chicago newspapers "pushed" to get them unsealed. Exposed divorce issues. One was that Jack wanted Jeri to go to a sex club with him, in Paris I believe, and give him a hummer in front of everybody.

HIS proclivities sank him.

I actually didn't hate Ellis from Die Hard. He was so comically over the top as a 1988 yuppie, that he was fun to watch.

Ellis: I've been watching you guys, and I'm going to presume that you're not here to snatch a few purses, am I right?

Hans Gruber: "Oh, you're VERY perceptive."

Now Anton Chigurh was plain SCARY.

I didn't hate him either. He had a very twisted set of "ethics" that he lived by.

"It's too late for you, but if you return the money, I give you my word that I won't kill your wife."

And Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs (and the sequel).

Scared me but good.

Do you mean characters whom the writers INTENDED for us to hate, or characters whom we hate even though the writers intended otherwise? I’ll throw out some of each.

(Can’t say for sure these are THE top ones, but they are the first to come to mind)

INTENDED TO BE HATED
Joffrey Baratheon
Dolores Umbridge
Wormtongue, Saruman
O’Brien (1984)
Scar (The Lion King)

UNINTENDED BUT HATED
Jar-Jar Binks, Anakin Skywalker in all three prequels
Hmmm, I can’t think offhand of any more characters whom I hated and whom the writers didn’t WANT me to hate.
