The NFL Might Ban the Use of the N-Word on the Field
New York Magazine ^ | 2/23 | Delia Paunescu

The NFL's competition committee is expected to enact a rule at their March owners meeting that would penalize players fifteen yards if they use the n-word on the field. John Wooten, the head of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, which monitors diversity in the league, told ESPN that he thinks the automatic fifteen-yard penalty should apply to first-time offenders, while second infractions should be punished with ejection. "I will be totally shocked if the competition committee does not uphold us on what we're trying to do," Wooten said. "We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room. Secretaries, PR people, whoever, we want it eliminated completely and want it policed everywhere."

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome, who serves on the league's competition committee said, "We did talk about it, I'm sure that you saw near the end of the year that Fritz Pollard (Alliance) came out very strong with the message that the league needs to do something about the language on the field. So we did discuss over the last three days."

Under the possible new rule, homophobic slurs might also be outlawed because, as Wooten reiterated, "there is too much disrespect in the game."

Will a Negro player calling another Negro player by that epithet be fined?

No, academics have said that black people can't be racist.

What would be the refs’ hand-signal for this infraction? I’m having trouble thinking of one.

Not sure about the signal but the refs will use a black flag with a picture of Caliph Baraq in addition to the yellow one.

So after they kick out about a dozen black players and the NAACP threatens to sue then what?

BTW my first thought when I heard this was “Hey Ref, that nasty Tom Brady called me a n* again!”

peyton Manning, Drew Brees etc getting ejected during the 1st quarter of every game. Every player being mic’d to monitor against this abuse as it escalates.

And what happens if the caller a nd callee are on the same team?

A penalty is a ‘ban’?

Ridiculous. Everyone knows it's a tax.

That’s exactly why this rule won’t last long. When the penalty falls disproportionately on black players, they’ll have to get rid of it.

But “honkey”, “whitey” and “cracker” are still encouraged!

How come it's considered OK for black folks to use the n-word among themselves, but we can't use any of the above to refer to ourselves or each other?

Doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement.

It may happen, but is it really "expected" to happen?

When the bloom comes off this latest fiasco, the ‘thought police’ would take over.

Players could go to the Ref and say
“That guy got mad when I tackled him and I know he is thinking a bad thing about me and would probably call me that if he knew he wouldn’t get tossed out”.

“That LT keeps winking at me and licking his lips so since I know for a fact that he is straight, he is really calling me a fag”.

“Ever since I came out, a couple of my team mates and some of the opposition refuse to talk to me or even acknowledge I am in the room. This is making me very uncomfortable”.

Just like the real world, TALK to some people and they want to dissect EVERY word to find some kind of slight or insult OR if you don’t talk to them, they accuse you of having a hostile work place.

Like the man says, we may as well sit down, bend over and kiss our collective asses goodbye.

In Dr. No, Ian Fleming calls the lackeys working for Dr. No, “Chigroes”. He even describes them in an unflattering way. I bet newer printings leave this out.

Also, Agatha Christie’s book, “And Then There Were None” was originally titled, “Ten Little N———”, They then changed it to “Ten Little Indians” before the last change.
