Competitive high school ice fishing. Who woulda thought?

In Wisconsin, it's a growing sport, complete with rankings, trophies, a state tournament, cheers and, yep, team uniforms.

Not officially sanctioned as a varsity sport, the activity is growing in popularity in western Wisconsin four years after starting up as a way for teams to square off against schools in eastern Wisconsin during the statewide championship planned for Saturday on Lake Winnebago.

The championship will be the eighth and final event of the season for the state circuit, which remains loosely affiliated under the unofficial direction of activities directors and coaches, some on staff and many volunteers.

Competitive ice fishing rules in Wisconsin! Just don’t stay out too long. We lose a few ice fishermen every year to the spring thaw.

High School students aren't supposed to drink beer.

The way I see it, ice fishing is a basic survival skill here in the north.

Very few Americans are as accustomed to harsh, brutal conditions like ice fishermen.

There was a big fight at the last event and three fishermen got kicked in the icehole.

No I’ve built fires on the ice. The radiant heat melts a couple of inches but wood above that burns fine.

Shanty floors are usually a couple of inches off the ice and the heat from a propane lantern isn’t enough to cause much melting.

Its on runners or wheels on the ice like a sled and is dragged out there by snowmobiles and 4 wheelers

Heat rises. It can be very comfy above at and the “floor” will still be below freezing temperature.

That's right. It allows you to get out of the house, away from the women and drink beer or spirits all day in the dead of Winter.

Perfect!

the Sunday before last my wife and I played “Ice Road Trucker” and drove across Lake Winnebago. It’s about 12 miles across on the ice road. Apparently the ice is around 36” thick right now so there is no imminent danger of it melting. The road opens up once the ice gets to be a foot thick. If you get to Wisconsin in the winter I would recommend it.

Got a cabin on a lake there.

It’s at least 20” thick I’d say. If a had a semitruck, I could drive it out there.
