Likewise Chula Vista, which is a suburb of San Diego. There must be some residents who read the daily San Diego paper, if only for the comics and the sports section.

I call BS. Neither median income, nor newspaper circulation and retail bookstore rates are actually universal indicators of literacy. Not a percentage of college graduates as well, which is an indicator of how well said community educated, not as literate they are which is a big difference.
