A Northern California couple out walking their dog on their property stumbled across a modern-day bonanza: $10 million in rare, mint-condition gold coins buried in the shadow of an old tree.

Nearly all of the 1,427 coins, dating from 1847 to 1894, are in uncirculated, mint condition, said David Hall, co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana, which recently authenticated them. Although the face value of the gold pieces only adds up to about $27,000, some of them are so rare that coin experts say they could fetch nearly $1 million apiece.

Look at how shiny and clean those gold coins are in there.

It’s almost like someone minted them yesterday and stuck them in there.

Congrats to the finders, but I am having trouble grasping why someone who made such a find would tell anyone, let alone leak it to the media. Bad move IMHO.

It was $27,000 face value. That would be equal to 2,700 eagle coins or 1306 troy ounces of gold. Just the gold would be $1.76 million before the numismatic value of the coins are considered.

The description of the coins, so rare that some would fetch $1 mil each? No way they could keep it quiet. My guess is that they've already explored that option.

so cometh the federal government to claim THEIR gold.

The US Government will claim that these gold coins should have been redeemed at the US Federal Reserve because Executive Order 6102 required all persons to deliver on or before May 1, 1933 as so they must be redeemed to the government at face value.

That's my point. Remember the guy, I think he was in Nevada, a year or so ago who discovered a stash of un-circulated silver dollars minted in the 1800’s that belonged to one of his deceased family member? If I recall correctly, it was worth $400,000 to $500,000 and the government took it all and paid the man ZERO!

When I get time I’ll try to find the article. I could be mistaken but I think this happened in Carson City and the deceased family member had a number of valuables horded. Easy to find articles on the govs confiscation of bullion and coins.

paper money was illegal in California until the 1870s

Color me skeptical.

In 1862 Congress passed the Legal Tender Act, which required that paper money greenbacks be accepted as payment for all debts. Wasn't retired till late 70s. Presumably some of this money made its way to CA and was legal there.

Face value is only $27,000... but then again they need to forfeit it all as that was the expectation when we were taken off the gold standard.
