LOS ANGELES – A Northern California couple out walking their dog on their Gold Country property stumbled across a modern-day bonanza: $10 million in rare, mint-condition gold coins buried in the shadow of an old tree.

Quite possibly the dumbest couple in America. Chances are excellent they are Democrats.
They found it last April apparently and have had PCGS and a guy in Tiburon going over them and grading them.
Smart would have been to filter them through PCGS a few at a time and sell them as needed. That would have negated the neat provenance of them though.
I’d assume they have the legal scene pretty tight, You can really get taken to the cleaners by douchebags if you just own up to a find like this, with people filing claims on it and never winning, but evaporating the finds in legal fees.
Their dog is a GOLDEN RETRIEVER.
I had a local (senior citizen type) tell me that there is Rebel gold buried in the hills around us somewhere. They said before the Union army got here the locals buried all their valuables in the hills, and carefully noted where it was. After the war, whoever knew the location was no longer around. He said his dad and grandad used to spend time hunting for it.
I bet this is stolen bank money. The robbers were either caught by the sheriff and hanged or indians caught them and staked them out in the hot sun.
Or they buried the money then forgot where they buried it and spent the rest of their life roaming the hills and ended their days driven mad.
I lived in California during the 1970’s, and remember reading at the time of another coin cache found in this same area.....the California Gold Country.
In fact, I was just thinking about this story the other day.
Apparently, someone purchased a parcel of land in the “Mother Lode” region of California. A previous owner.....either a doctor or a chiropractor....buried huge amounts of Morgan Silver dollars and “Peace” Silver dollars in old glass jars on the property.
Over time, these glass jars broke and the dirt on the property was “littered” with thousands of these silver dollars, much to the delight of the current owner of the land.

Q. Some lottery winners have later said that such sudden wealth ended up being more of a curse than a blessing. Have the two of you discussed how you will navigate the path ahead and the potential pitfalls that might come with instant great wealth?
Mary: We try not to dwell on the negative.
John: It will be a broader path than the one we have been on.
Mary: Money can change other people’s perception of us more than our own perception of ourselves. Have you heard the song by Cindy Lauper, Money Changes Everything? We don’t want that; we don’t plan to tell our extended family or friends until more time goes by.
Q. You have chosen to remain anonymous out of concern for your family’s safety and potentially from being overwhelmed by the media. But how do you think this find will change your lives?
Mary: We’re the same people we were before, just with more freedom of choice. Our finances won’t have to dictate so many of our day to day decisions.
How could they get full numismatic value if they didn’t go through a public sale?
I'm sure there's ways, such as private collectors who would just as sooon not involve the IRS
Wonder if somebody (maybe the first FReeper)decided the government wasn't going to tell him he could not own gold coins.
