Jonathan Kealing was on his way to the dog groomer Sunday morning when his car hit a line of potholes on eastbound Minnesota 62 in Minneapolis.
"We hit some normal potholes, then it got so intense. We slammed into this chasm in the Earth," Kealing said.
It wasn't until a stop later in the morning that he saw just how intense: The rim was no longer round, but flat, and the tire couldn't hold air.
After getting a $500 repair bill from the auto shop, Kealing took to Twitter to alert the Minnesota Department of Transportation to the situation.
"Dear @mndotnews: The potholes are so bad on Hwy-62 b/t Cedar and 28th Ave that it bent my wheel and trashed my tire. Pls fix ASAP," he wrote.
And given the weather's impact on metro-area roads, Kealing is not the only one needing repairs.

So, asphalt plants just stop operating in the winter just because they have bad attitudes?
Exactly. Why not google for a bit about the availability of hot asphalt in the winter?

I know a guy that invented a shovel that would stand on it’s own. Didn’t need the three guys standing around holding theirs while one guy did the work.
It was not a big seller in the shovel ready community.
If memory serves asphalt needs a certain temp to be used. they may not stop making it, but it is usually stock piled for spring through fall repaving seasons. Most patch jobs done in winter don’t last long, a big pot hole is better served with a metal plate over it.
Use propane to heat the hole and the mix.
After Katrina I saw a photo of a pothole on Calhoun street that had a stove in it. And you could not see the stove from street level. Now that’s a pothole.
I was down there in November after the storm. My son’s place had ten feet of water. The whole area was deserted. No people, no birds, no insects, nothing. No sounds etc. It was like a Twilight Zone episode. And that was three months after the storm.
You’re right about the temperature. But if it were that simple the DOT here wouldn’t be such a big joke:
When you see DOT trucks/employees doing road work with asphalt in this neck of the woods, it’s guaranteed not to last. Private contractors: Roads that last.
Go figure.
If you don’t clear your sidewalk of the snow you get fined.(St.Paul/MPLS/etc)
If the city doesn’t fix the roads and you break your suspension, you complain and are told to pound sand.
Same in TN, guess it is the same all over the US. Cause the patch jobs they did after the big TN flood that hit more than Nashville, did not hold up very well. Secondary rds were never repaired unless the pot hole was in the middle of the road way.
The area just out side Memphis which is made up of many small cities and counties were hit just as hard. The Navy Base in Millington, had to evacuate housing, Entire E side was flooded out. Serve Pro was called in. City residents had 1 lone Fema bus to take applications. 3 trailer parks were wiped out like in Katrina. Plus homes and businesses.
We did not have C & W stars to hold concerts for us, we rolled up our sleeves and did it our selves.
This isn’t a flood or natural disaster or “unexpected”- this happens every freaking year.
The only difference is every year it gets less funding to fix.
Road work seems to be a continual source of make work income in union states.
