TWISP, Wash. — An 11-year-old girl shot a cougar that was following her 14-year-old brother to their home in north central Washington, the state Fish and Wildlife Department said.

The female cougar killed last week was about 4 years old and weighed about 50 pounds — half of what it should weigh, said Officer Cal Treser.

"This cougar was very, very skinny," he said.

Possibly a descendant of Annie Oakley?

Nice story. I’m glad the parents love their kids enough to teach them to shoot. I’d guess sibling rivalry will never get out of hand in that family, not when the little sister has done that big a favor.

His 11-year-old daughter had a tag to hunt cougars and shot the animal, he said.

....better get another tag to shoot reporters

Poor girl. PETA will now be lecturing her that it’s her brother’s fault for looking like food..

In one of the pictures, she looks much like Emma Watson, of Harry Potter fame.

Sounds like sis was using big brother as bait. She had a cougar tag, and was armed?

I’m a big believer in ‘Be Prepared’, but this sounds like malice aforethought.

I read this last night and fully enjoyed the read about this family and their lifestyle. Sounds to me like they have it together and have done very well concerning their kids use of fire arms etc.

Too bad our country no longer sees the value of teaching our kids the use of firearms....but then we no longer protect our children today.

This story doesn’t smell right. That poor cougar was HALF its normal weight.. Emaciated and probably REALLY thirsty during the CA drought. I say let him eat the boy, or at least his leg.

there had been about three cougar sightings in that area....the cougars very skinny....

people may not realize it but cougars go after deer and even elk fawns....

there's wolves in that area...

so are the cougars suffering because the wolves have gotten carte Blanche to roam and attack deer and elk without any predator(man) to restrict them?.....I think probably yes...it has to have an effect to have a whole another species vying for the same food you are...

CA drought?

This is at the east end of the North Cascades Pass in Washington State. Though snowpack was low until the last couple weeks, believe me no cougars in the area are thirsty.

I am never without a rifle and a cat tag when out of the house. To many of them around these days. Guy that works for me had one after his four year old last weekend in the outback.
