It happened at a Cracker Barrel, of all places. As the security camera shows, Dailey entered the restaurant on Feb. 7 for an early lunch. At about the same time, 8-year-old Myles Eckert came in with his family.
Myles was very excited. He'd just found a $20 bill in the parking lot. He'd started thinking of what he could spend it on.
"I kind of wanted to get a video game, but then I decided not to," Myles says.
He changed his mind when he saw the guy in uniform.

Can’t we just accept a heart warming story without trying to dissect it or make political statements about it?? Take a look at the pic of the young man hugging his dad’s tombstone and if that doesn’t melt your heart I don’t know what can!

Besides how would an 8 year old know that and where was paying for this man’s lunch even mentioned?
There are ways to give the owner of the lost money a chance to claim it? In a parking lot no less. Share your wisdom....
I assume describing the lost money is out so maybe the boy should have asked everyone if they lost anything and what it was? Just in case. Or how about asking for the serial number?

Group hug time so we can feel good, that is important, but the kid was doing good with someone else’s money. This would have been heartwarming if it was his grass cutting money. If he had given it to a Greenpeace activist there would have been a completely different reaction on this forum.
How about an opposing sad story? Like it was an old crippled person’s $20 who goes to Cracker Barrel once a month as a treat and this was the $20 they were going to give to their grandchild for their birthday? Wouldn’t it be nice for them to get their $20 back?
Conservatives are supposed to have principles that extend beyond “if it feels good do it..”.
He should have found someone at Cracker Barrel and told them he found some money outside and asked if someone had reported some money lost. If not he could have left a contact number so he could be reached if someone did try to claim it. He didn’t need to disclose how much was found or give it to anyone.
It was in the freaking parking lot! It could have blown in from anywhere!

Your sense of doing the "correct" thing suggests you have a rather rigid sense of right and wrong foregoing the situational reality.

I read a follow up story that said Myles stood out in the parking lot for two hours asking everyone he met if they had lost $20..........Since he couldn't find the owner, he and his mom got hungry so they went inside to eat.

Chances are pretty good that 9 out of 10 people he might have asked would have said they lost it, even if they had NOT.
You know that as well as I do.
That being said, while a lot of kids are of the “gimmee, get me, buy me” persuasion, this little boy did something wonderful!
I am proud of him and for him.
Perhaps his young father was wondering what would happen to his son as he was dying, who knows?
He can rest in peace knowing his little guy is gonna be a wonderful man when he grows up.
That boys Mom is doing an outstanding job with him, and I salute them both!

This is true. OTOH, it is appropriate to consider that from the child's POV. Namely, that he knew that it had come to him gratuitously, and not a result of his own effort. And that there was no way obvious to him (or, I confess, to me) to return it to its rightful owner. As to the "gratuitous" nature of the find, it is instructive to the Christian to consider it in relation to "the Lord's Prayer," a.k.a "the Our Father," a.k.a. "the model prayer" (since it was given to the disciples as a model, and was not presented as Jesus' own prayer to the Father):“‘Our Father in heaven,Notice if you will that, our own efforts notwithstanding, we are to consider our food, and indeed all our possessions, to have come from God. IOW, I see no difference between the food set before that same child by his mother, and the $20 which came from his Heavenly Father.

Right and wrong does not fluctuate with the “situational reality”. Situational ethics is the bastion of left wing liberalism and the bane of the conservative mind.

LTC Dailey is assigned to the Ohio ANG there in Toledo so he's not on a TDY assignment........But you knew that.....LOL!
BUT, maybe as an officer he has an expense account? I'm sure you know the answer to that question.....What do you think?
