What’s behind Illinois’ employment collapse?

A smaller and smaller percentage of adults are working to support the entire state population. Why does this matter?

Because a booming economy provides the benefits of opportunity and upward mobility. But not only that. Growing the number of taxpayers is essential for funding core government services and pension bills. The only other tools legislators have are tax hikes, which have done more to chase away taxpayers than to fund the government.

The percentage of the working-age population that is employed fell by 5.6 percentage points, from 65 percent in January 2008 to 59.4 percent in December 2013. This percentage, called the employment ratio, has been described by economist Paul Ashworth as the “best measure of labor market conditions.”

The Great Recession hit the jobs market in January 2008. Since then, Illinois has seen a greater decline in its employment ratio than any other state in the Midwest.

I always did well here in Chicago. Now this job market is so bad. I have a decent gig that lasts till May. Then heck with this cold and lousy jobs. I’m going to head down to New Orleans.

You’d think the economy would be booming, since every dollar paid out in unemployment compensation generates $1.77 somewhere.

And you’d think they’d be saying, “Thank you.”

The people in Louisiana are very nice. Just remember that everything is flexible there, particularly with the local authorities. The rules aren’t quite the same there. :-)

“What’s behind Illinois’ employment collapse?”

Single party rule by Democrat/Socialist/Marxist/Progressives/Obammunists? Too many takers, not enough makers? Education failure? Failure of the work ethic and the entitlement mentality? Anti-business climate? Regulations and taxes? Unions? Corruption? All of the above, since they’re pretty much all the same thing?

Easy, their solution to their problems was to raise taxes on individuals and businesses and borrow an incredible amount of money.

In WI we did the exact opposite and many IL businesses and jobs, if they could, moved here. We cut taxes and cut spending and paid off loans and now we’re looking at a Governor who is aiming to give surplus money back to taxpayers.

Oh yeah and we cut the unions’ power off at the knees, at least the public sector unions.

The taxes aren’t really that bad here (IL)...about in the middle. The problem is the corruption, the deadlock that the Dumbocrat Party has on the state legislature and Governorship, and the overwhelmingly incompetent financial management of state finances (see #2 above). It is a shame to see a state with the agricultural, industrial, transportation, and manufacturing resources Illinois has so poorly managed and run into the ground by a bunch of Obama-like incompetent, inexperienced, lazy know-nothing politicians. When they control everything - the more conservative parts of the state may as well not exist, your state representatives are not going to even be able to get a bill up for discussion unless the Democrats want it to go forward.

The best hope is Bruce Rauner, a millionaire businessman running for Governor on the promise of running the state like a business and term limits. We’ll find out in a few weeks...

Let me make it even simpler:

Imagine what the US would be like if there were no Tea Party, no Ted Cruz or Rand Paul, just Obama, Reid, and Pelosi doing whatever they wanted to do. And that it had been this way since 2002 with no term limits on any of them.

That’s why Illinois is what is is.

Because a booming economy provides the benefits of opportunity and upward mobility.

The Ruling Class, GOP and Dems, doesn't like upward mobility.
