Netflix has “The Bridge of San Luis Rey” and “Jack London” on DVD. I previewed them and they are, for the most part, as forgettable as the reviews suggest. Michael O’Shea does bear a strange resemblance to Spencer Tracy, as A.W. says. It was amusing to see him, as London, reading a draft of ‘White Fang’ (or maybe ‘The Call of the Wild’) to his dog. Also amusing was the Japanese officer patiently explaining to war correspondent London how Japan would of necessity crush the U.S. Navy in a few decades. They had to get the war angle in there.

“With the Marines at Tarawa” provoked some controversy when it was first made known to the public back in December. It was the first time Americans on the home front were shown images of dead American fighting men as they lay on the battlefield. The movie is available in its entirety at youtube. Here is a link.

HJS I watched that 3 times, my Father was one of the Marines who landed there. He got shot in the leg and kept fighting, it was a couple of days before they got him off that hellhole. I teared up everytime I watched it, no wonder it takes about a half a bottle of good whisky to get hime to talk about and he tears up every time he does. Pop was there when I got on the plane in Frisco headed to Vietnam he gave me a big hug and a hand shake. He was there when they shipped me back in 71 and stayed by my bedside until I was ready to travel. Pop’s 93 years old and I went and sipped a little whisky with him yesterday. No greater Hero in my life, he raised 5 of us kid’s with me being the youngest. As soon as it warms up I’m taking him out to the ranch for a little more whisky and some catfishing, did I say he was MY HERO?
