Real Live Battlefield: Video Game ‘Map’ Mirrors Ukraine Tank Depot, Pits Russia vs. USA

The new Battlefield 4 video game from Electronic Arts, in which fictional forces from the United States, Russia and China go to war with each other features a curious, perhaps coincidental, new ‘map’ that is an almost exact replica of a massive ‘secret’ Ukranian tank depot.

The map, dubbed Zavod 311, engages players from around the world in various scenarios that feature tanks, armored vehicles, helicopters, foot soldiers, and a host of weaponry with the goal being “conquest and control” of specific targets on the map. Up until recently it was just another map to play. But a report from The Daily Mail suggests that the video game could become a real-live battlefield in the very near future, because it houses hundreds of dormant tanks that may be re-commissioned should Russia decide to move its mobilized military assets from Crimea into Ukraine sovereign territory.

After hearing about the strange Soviet-era tank cemetery from a friend, photographer Patvel Itkin, 18, spent months trying find its whereabouts.

Despite the area being heavily monitored by guards, Mr Itkin managed to sneak in and spent several hours taking dozens of photographs.

Once a thriving tank repair plant, work at the depot wound down after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, with many of the vehicles on site abandoned.

Dunno if tanks that long abandoned could be refurbished, but the pics of the tank graveyard v. the game are pretty cool.

Zavod is far and away the most popular new map in BF4. There’s an amazing balance between sides, and the center points (C&D) are the most contested parts of the map.

I do really enjoy Zavod with the exception that it’s too small for really effective airborne ops.

Zavod is a good map. If you’re a good helo pilot, you can just fly around the whole game with gunners, strafing your opponents with support fire.

BUT, I still like collapsing buildings in the Siege of Shanghai.

You might be able to get some moving, but I wouldn’t want to ride in one. No upgraded fire control, electronics, reactive armor....IOW, a death trap.

With infantry, they would be hell on a force without tanks.
T-54/55 and some T-62s, the place needs a weed whacker.

Battlefield is pretty intense. I play BBC2, and I remember the first time I entered the game online. I just stood there for a few minutes thinking “WOA!”, until someone ran up and knifed me... LOL

All tanks are a moving coffin friend. Doesn’t matter how new they are. The days of heavy armor are over.

Some are more survivable than others. I’d take an M1A2 Abrams with modern electronics and fire control over a T-(fill in the blank) that hasn’t been maintained since Desert Storm any day. Throw in modern ammo and you’ve got a winning weapon system.

I think there is a bit more time before that becomes apparent with respect to the M1, it’s like 2700 and 0 against other MBTs and I don’t think a single one has been irrepairably damaged by non-MBT action. They may have lost crew, but even the few we shot up in GW-I by other M1’s to keep from enemy, (they’d been disabled, track loss I believe) ended up being repaired and put back in service.

Might need to commandeer a couple soon if things keep heating up. The problem is, with any kind of enemy air superiority, it’s just another target.
