i just have to believe these people live in small towns/rural areas and do not get out much. there is no other explanation for some of this. kidnapping the baby bc they require that you give them the name of a pediatrician? seriously? we had to have selected a ped before giving birth, and who in their right mind wouldn’t, just for the sake of PRUDENCE??

In this case, the guy says his sister and some other relatives are nurses, so he doesn’t need a pediatrician.

I think a lot of it is just plain stubbornness. Like a teenager. If someone in “authority” tells them something, they automatically do the opposite.

And then there are those who don’t realize that there are lots of morons out there reproducing and if hospitals don’t make an effort to make sure people have some clue, they can be sued.

well OF COURSE they have to have someplace COOL to go on spring break, i mean it's the "get mine" mentality. we have to have the coolest spring break possible and we are at Sidwell Friends where people go on cool spring break vacas all the time, so what do you expect us to do?

My son just called my daughter to say that he'd finally arrived in Washington from Atlanta. He's accompanying my grandson to a leadership conference in DC, although my son not allowed to attend. Not even allowed on the premises. I think this is grandson's Jr. NROTC. They work on "white hacking".

I should add that my son has a top Q Clearance because he works with nuclear materials at Savannah River. It's not like he's some thug, or something. He'll catch the train to Richmond later today and hang out all week with his sister and her family while grandson does his top secret leadership training thing in DC.

I dunno. I’m a little uncomfortable to have my grandson working in a school sponsored activity called “white hacking”. And then they send him off to DC and don’t allow his parent in the door! I fear that I could wake up one day and find him in the news like Edward Snowden!

I was wondering about the math used by the EPA to claim that the new “Tier 3” standards for gasoline will result in annual savings by consumers of $8000.

This is after costing the manufacturers of gasoline “billions of dollars” in upgrade costs.

Is this the same math used by Obamacare to insure millions more while saving us all on insurance premiums?

You may be right about people in rural areas-there is a reason most people live in them, and it isn’t to have more oversight, concern, etc. It is to be left alone to live a (usually) close-to-nature, hippie-but-conservative life without interference. It is a totally different world from SA, just over 30 miles away.

Most of the kids out here are homeschooled or in private schools, and there are a lot of home births, too, with a nurse midwife.

My cub was born with the military, so I’ve no idea what goes on in the civilian ones, but my doc said I could go home after less than 24 hours, and no one asked me a damn thing-I picked up my kid, got in the car and went home to rest. That was a long time ago, so I’ve no idea what may have changed.

I agree that story sounds like the parents are paranoid, but with what goes on today, but considering some of the stuff that goes on, maybe we would be, too.

don’t think i ever accompanied any of mine in HS on any field trips, even those that were flown to. i wouldn’t take anything ominous from it.

it is fine to eschew contact and want a more isolated existence, but it really pays to be informed about what goes on in the rest of the world and to be somewhat savvy. there are not black helicopters in EVERY sky. i think someone in the thread pointed out that if there is no pediatrician on staff at the hospital, they are covering their behinds by requiring that you have one for them to refer the baby to in case of a post-birth emergency. now where i live, there is no hospital that does not have a pediatrician on staff, but i would prefer that a pediatrician of my choosing be contacted in an emergency, so i had no problem giving them the name.

That describes a lot of my beliefs-and I’ve always been an unrepentant rebel-if I were a Viking, I’d likely want to go to valhallah, sword in hand. We differ on many opinions here, but most of us are at least somewhat suspicious of nanny authority, however we perceive it. Trusting authority is likely not a healthy thing to do in today’s world.

BTW, if I were the about-to-bingo parents, I’d just have my insurance co call the hospital/birthing center and now fool with it myself isn’t that part of what you pay premiums for?

T5 obviously when i rag on Libertarians, i am teasing bc i know several of you consider yourselves among their number. It’s fine to question the state, but on FR far too often you see people who are looking for black helicopters when there are just normal every day things going on. On FR every cop is ready to come in your house and shoot your dog, every dr or hosp is ready to take your child and give it to the state to raise etc. I am just saying that while there may be rare instances of it, that is truly not the norm at this point in time.
