I thought Charles was born “de Gaulle”. His father was Henri de Gaulle.

You are correct, I was in error. Thanks!

I had been told he adopted the name, that “de Gaulle” meant “of France” and in a time when the Soviet leaders changed their names to “Steel” and “Iron” (Stalin and Lenin, or so I was told) I found it quite believable.
