The Environmental Protection Agency issued final rules Monday to slash the amount of sulfur in gasoline, which would help cut smog-causing pollution from autos and bring the rest of the country's fuel supply in line with California's standards.
The new rule for "Tier 3" gasoline calls for reducing the amount of sulfur in fuel by two-thirds, to 10 parts per million from 30 parts per million. Similar low-sulfur gasoline is already in use in California, Europe, Japan and South Korea.
The new gasoline would be available at the pump by January 2017.
Cutting sulfur improves the efficiency of catalytic converters in automobiles, which helps remove other pollutants that dirty the air and damage public health. The EPA said once the new rule was fully in place, it could "help avoid up to 2,000 premature deaths per year and 50,000 cases of respiratory ailments in children."
"These standards are a win for public health, a win for our environment and a win for our pocketbooks," said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy.

2000 early deaths are avoided? That isn’t much. That many will worry themselves to death figuring how to pay for gas and get to work.
And the entire sulfur cut - multiplied by 10 million - will be equal to around 1 nano-volcano eruption.
Folks, I know I’m a broken record...but we’re not talking top of the class (in any respect) when we’re talking the EPA, congress and the dork-O-dent.
Why the h*ll do we obey them?

European petrol (as gasoline is known there) have sulfur impurities of around 5 parts per million, very necessary to use the advanced de-NOx catalytic converters seen on many German-market Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Opel and Volkswagen vehicles.

On what scientific basis was this decision made by the EPA or was it just pulled out of their a$$?
Why not publish the necessity for these changes and let them be verified by an independent investigating team.
Include in the report if these spec changes are economically justifiable or will these further destroy the incentive for upgrading and/or expanding our domestic refineries.
As defined in the United States Constitution, what branch of government is the EPA to be writing law?
Since congress has happily given up its legislative powers in Article I Section 1 to El Presidente, I've just about talked myself out of voting in congressional elections.
Voting increasingly serves more to condone tyranny than to send reps to make laws on our behalf.
I said the same thing and some freeper jumper all over me saying I like pollution and hate children or something.
I just paid $3.96 a gallon to fill my car up. It is on the rise again. Last time I filled up was $3.56.

What’s the projected cost impact of this? When I first read about it, I saw numbers like 60 cents per gallon. Recent articles indicate it would be pennies.
It’s difficult to say. I believe it all comes down to how quickly the refiners amortize the cost of the capital equipment needed to produce the low sulfur product.
60 cents / gal sounds way too high. The govt estimate of pennies / gal sounds low. I found some sources that estimated the diesel cost increase at 10 cents / gal but I don’t know how directly that would carry over to the gasoline process.
