Despite an increase in the number of students who receive free meals as a part of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign, 1.6 million students have dropped out of the school lunch program, according to a Government Accountability Office Report (GAO), which noted that part of the decline was due to the palatability of the lunch offerings, and “plate waste”—students throwing away some of the food. […]

“Further, some SFAs we visited noted that negative student reactions to lunches that complied with the new meat and grain portion size limits directly affected program participation in their districts,” said the GAO. The school food authorities noted that changes made to sandwiches led “to a middle and high school boycott of school lunch by students that lasted for 3 weeks and, at the same time, “participation in school lunch significantly declined in those schools.” …

I have children in an excellen elementary school that has incredible parent involvement. Over the past year, my girls have reAlly become dissatisfied with school lunches. They would now take a cold lunch every day if they could— I will make one day a week for them while they must pack their own if they additional days. I recently ate school lunch with my third grader and had to put on a brave face to choke it down. They had “pizza” ( i have had the misfortune of eating it earlier in the year) yesterday and my daughter informed me that 19 of the 23 kids in her class brought their lunch instead. I asked who the 4 pizza eaters were and recognized that they were ones that very likely didnt have any other option. Anyway, I don’t think it is an accident that three items (pizza, burgers, hot dogs) that should be popular with the kids are so incredibly bad to the point that my kids are hesitant to eat them outside of school....

Soda saps minerals from bones, and people think that diet soda is healthier and therefore drink more of it. Soda machine sales have jumped since the machines were switched to diet.
