Adopting an old dog

Not sure where this comes from but nice on an old dogs thoughts.

One by One, they pass by my cage, Too old, too worn, too broken, no way. Way past his time, he can't run and play. Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way.

A little old man, arthritic and sore, It seems I am not wanted anymore. I once had a home, I once had a bed, A place that was warm, and where I was fed. Now my muzzle is gray, and my eyes slowly fail. Who wants a dog so old and so frail?

My family decided I didn't belong, I got in their way, my attitude was wrong. Whatever excuse they made in their head, Can't justify how they left me for dead. Now I sit in this cage, where day after day, The younger dogs get adopted away.

When I had almost come to the end of my rope, You saw my face, and I finally had hope. You saw thru the gray, and the legs bent with age, And felt I still had life beyond this cage. You took me home, gave me food and a bed, And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.

We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low, You love me so dearly, you want me to know. I may have lived most of my life with another, But you outshine them with a love so much stronger. And I promise to return all the love I can give, To you, my dear person, as long as I live.

I may be with you for a week, or for years, We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears. And when the time comes that God deems I must leave, I know you will cry and your heart, it will grieve. And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new, My thoughts and my heart will still be with you. And I will brag to all who will hear, Of the person who made my last days so dear.

We adopted an old old Corgi that blessed our household for only two years or so before she passed. It was really sad but she knew she was loved through and through in her final year and to this day, that makes me happy! So I did it again, only this time I adopted a 12 or 13 year old Beagle that was looking for love and family. I’ve had him almost 3 years now, and he’s been on the expensive side due to teeth and whatnot, but I would not have it any other way. I’m not sure what’s next, or when, but once you take in an old dog and you feel what it is like to provide a warm, happy and stable place for them to grow old(er) in... well, there’s just no turning back. I don’t know when it will be, and I hope it’s a long way off, but I am certain my next adoption will be another 10+ year old looking for a warm, happy and quiet life.

when we adopted our last dog (she was our 4th pick as they were adopting out so many it was a 4 hour wait) we had to go home and bring our older dog to see if they would get along before we were allowed to adopt. that was in 2003. he died 2 yaers ago at 13 and she died last year about the same age. we have been lucky in taht all the new dogs and the established dogs got along fine. the last 3 were lab mixes.

After 67 years as a CAT person, I adopted a 6yo mutt named Sparky. His previous owner kept his space clean and kept him well fed but totally ignored him. For the last 8 years the relationship has become a question if he is my dog, am I his person or what. I think it is more of we are each other’s other! He is now slower, older and deaf but then again I am not much better physically: older, slower and hearing impaired. However, we are good company for each other!
PS: After 8 years he and Molly, my 15yo cat, at best, tolerate each other!

Both my dawgs are rescues.

My little blue healer sits in my lap for the first hour I’m home from work every day. My aussie sits at the foot of the recliner. I have been blessed.

“About all she does anymore is eat, sleep, pee and poop.”

You left out “ and she continues to love you, no matter what”, unlike the humans you were mentioning.

She is indeed your best friend, she doesn’t judge you, just loves you...

Since your dogs do have to get along, I think it’s quite reasonable to take your dog with you and have her help you pick out your second dog.

The man who said that you can’t buy love never got himself a dog.

You are a good person. Our dog is 13 going on 14. She sleeps alot and her hips give out on her sometimes but we're gonna keep her until god calls her. Hopefully she'll be waiting to greet us there when our time here is over.

My last two dogs were both rescues. First one was with us for almost 14 years. He had some behavioral problems due to his first owner apparently beating him, but we got him past that. He was a German Shepherd/Golden Retriever mix. Beautiful dog. He was 5 or 6 when our first son was born, and we were kinda nervous how he'd react to him since "Jerry" had received all our attention for years prior. Turned out he was an absolutely wonderful companion and protector for my oldest son, then second son when he came along.

He's been gone bout 6 years now, I still get misty eyed when I think about him. Could not ask for a better dog with the kids.

We've had a black labradoodle (another rescue) since 6 months after Jerry died. Another wonderful dog, excellent temperment and SMART! Probably the smartest dog I've ever had. I cannot believe someone gave him up at a year old, but they did and I'm glad to have him. He'll likely be our last dog as our sons will be off to college when he gets older so when he passes I'm thinking no more dogs. Had one just about my entire life, don't feel complete without one in the home, but it just never gets easier saying goodbye - only harder.

Call me crazy, but I think dogs are God's gift to mankind. What other creature on the earth loves us so unconditionally?
