William "Wild Bill" Guarnere, one of the World War II veterans whose exploits were dramatized in the TV miniseries "Band of Brothers," has died. He was 90.

His son, William Guarnere Jr., confirmed Sunday that his father died at Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Guarnere was rushed to the hospital early Saturday and died of a ruptured aneurysm early Saturday night.

"He had a good, long life," his son said.

The HBO miniseries, based on a book by Stephen Ambrose, followed the members of Easy Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne Division from training in Georgia in 1942 through some of the war's fiercest European battles through the war's end in 1945.

I believe that first pic is of Frank John Hughes, who played Bill Guarnere in Band of Brothers.

I can’t thank the young men and women who came to the service of their country enough for their sacrifices in securing a somewhat safer world for us all.

They met the call.

No, he’s not the last. Here’s a list of the surviving brothers:

Donald Malarkey is still alive.

IIRC, although 18 Easy Co. vets remain living, Don Malarkey is now the last one to have been portrayed in Band of Brothers.

I have fought a good fight,
I have finished my course,
I have kept the faith.
2 Timothy 4:7 (KJV)

"Arm yourselves, and be ye men of valour, and be in readiness for the conflict; for it is better for us to perish in battle than to look upon the outrage of our nation and our altar. As the Will of God is in Heaven, even so let it be." (1 Maccabees 3:58–60)

God Of Our Fathers

Rest in Peace, fallen brother, rest in peace!
We who remain hold you in high honor.
Rest, fallen brother, in this sacred precinct;
We who remain keep this place sacred.
Rest, fallen brother, among these, your comrades;
We who remain keep the watch.
Rest, fallen brother, among these who answered the Nation’s call;
We who remain press the fight forward in your name.
Rest, fallen brother, lay down thy burden;
We who remain have taken up the torch.
Rest in Peace, fallen brother, rest in eternal peace!

Thanks for the ping, ML - Always ready to give thanks to our Heroes. I also have a soft spot for the Screaming Eagles - my Uncle served with them in Korea and my cousin in 'Nam.

While this was penned by Bernard Montgomery about the British paras at Arnhem, the sentiment applies:

“What Manner Of Men Are These That Wear The Maroon Beret?

They are firstly all volunteers and are toughened by physical training. As a result they have infectious optimism and that offensive eagerness which comes from well-being. They have jumped from the air and by doing so have conquered fear.

Their duty lies in the van of the battle. They are proud of this honour. They have the highest standards in all things whether it be skill in battle or smartness in the execution of all peace time duties. They are in fact - men apart - every man an emperor.

Of all the factors, which make for success in battle, the spirit of the warrior is the most decisive. That spirit will be found in full measure in the men who wear the maroon beret.”

RIP, SSG Guarnere.
"All the way!"

"....about the British paras at Arnhem."

Jeremy Clarkson did a few documentaries called 'War Stories' that are available on youtube. Very well done, one was about Maj. Robert Cain, VC and the South Staffords Reg at Arnhem. Simply astounding, and Clarkson has a comment at the end that is unforgettable.
