Firefox Auto Update Question and What Happened to Michelle Malkin?
3/9/14 | Me

I need to pick someone's brain on a Firefox question and on what happened to Michelle Malkin.

First, I can't keep Firefox from automatically updating. I have tried everything I can find on the Internet about ensuring Firefox doesn't automatically. I have version 24 and 25 and I don't want to update any further, but no matter what I try it still continues to do so.

I've told Firefox not to update under the Tools/Options/Advanced/Update tab. I deleted the Maintenance Service. I've gone into about:config and deleted the update URL. AND NOTHING WORKS!!!!!!

Anyone else out there got any ideas? I want to keep using it but I'm afraid I'll have little choice but to go to another browser. Mozilla is really slitting their collective throats with this.

Secondly, I've noticed that Michelle Malkin doesn't seem to be on Fox News anymore. Usually the email updates I get from her would have links to her appearances on Fox News. Since about last October those links are no longer in email alerts and the Youtube sight for Right Sightings no longer posts anything newer than Oct 2013.

Anyone know what happened to her? Did she go a tick off someone? I wonder if it had anything to do with the sudden hiring of Elizabeth Hasselhoff last year.

Thanks.

Chromium seems to work okay as an alternative

What do you get by preventing updates?

First of all why don't you want any further updates?

There is a way I used for a while which simply meant keeping a compressed version on hand to use after one of those auto updates.

But as I remember the real fix is deleting some file in Firefox. I do not remember what it was, but I think the fix is posted somewhere on the Firefox site - Troubleshooting perhaps?

What was happening to me with v25 or so was flash vids stopped working.

After the fix all is well and am on v27.01. It can become a security issue unless you keep current.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-stop-firefox-automatically-making-connections

Read the whole thing, you have to use the url “about” for some things.

Unless you’re smarter than the developers, let it upgrade.

Commentators come and go. Relax.

Firefox 26 and up don't allow for the legacy downloader screen. That's one. SEcondly, I don't like the idea of someone updating software unless I want it to happen. I don't let Microsoft do it, I don't let Adobe Flashplayer do it, I don't let Sun Java do it. I update when I want to update.

The idea of someone else having control over my software is very unnerving. I also just found out that Amazon Kindle for PC software has been replaced with a "cloud viewer." I don't want anything I own in a "cloud" of any sort. So I deleted the software and told Amazon I will no longer order ebooks from them until they change it back.

I'm happy with FF 24 & 25. I don't want to go any further. If they continue to change things I will indeed go to another browser and say goodbye to FF for good.

That doesn’t help me. I’ve read that article many times, and nothing it says to do helps.

If you are running Firefox on a Windows OS based machine ...

Then you should see an orange-ish tab of sorts, near the upper left-hand corner of the Firefox window.

Click on it.

Look around in the resulting pop-down spread ... and find Options ... and click on that.

You should get a pop-out-to-the-side ... and find in that, another Options ... and click on that.

Next, you should be seeing an Options window. In that window, select the Advanced tool-button.

In the Advanced set of tabs that should result ... select Update.

Under Firefox updates, select:

“Never check for updates ...”

I know this post is two subjects in one, but would it be possible to get this out to the IT crowd? Just ask them to ignore the Michelle Malkin question unless they have an answer for that too.

Thanks.
