Beer-Drinking Dog Pic Leads to Two Arrests
WIVB ^ | Monday, March 10, 2014 | Nancy Sanders

Posted on 03/10/2014 7:26:46 PM PDT by nickcarraway

A SUNY Brockport student from West Seneca and a Genesee County man have been arrested for allegedly forcing a dog to be held upside down and drink beer.

Brockport Police report that Robert Yates, 20, took a photo of the dog being held over the beer keg and posted it to Twitter at a Saturday night house party. Officers also arrested Shane Oliver, 20, of Bergen. Both are facing charges of torturing/injuring animals.

The dog’s owner was apparently not involved.

The college issued a statement saying, “We were alarmed to learn of this disturbing photo. The College is investigating this matter and will take appropriate action once the details surrounding the photo are learned.”

What does the dog have to say about it? Does he like beer? Did he lap it up?

When I was a teen, we used to poor beer into my friend’s Golden Retreiver’s water dish and that sucker would lap it up, and after a while would rage around the house drunk as a skunk and bouncing off walls.

That’s alcohol abuse. On a seperate note, my neighbor’s hunting dog helped himself up at bird hunting camp. He knocked over my beer and slurped it up. “Baron!”

My dogs won't even drink cool coffee.

The offer of Coffee or beer can be used to chase them away from where they are not wanted.

“Dumb animals don’t know any better”

Except they do. I live on the Eastern coast of India, and there are a couple of elephant herds here that have discovered that they like alcohol, and that humans often have it in their houses. The herds have trashed several villages over the past year or so, breaking open all the houses to get at the palm toddy being made inside. I should add that elephants tend to be “mean” drunks, so such raids tend to get out of hand in short order.

Also, years ago there was a bar in Australia somewhere that I read about. The bartender had a pig for a pet, and the pig loved to drink beer. The regular patrons would buy one for it now and then. It was apparently a “happy” drunk, and would become very friendly after a couple of brews (Victoria Bitters, natch).

I bought a dog a beer in a bar once, he sat up on his stool and requested it, and it was a regular routine for him, he would also play pool pretty convincingly, it was the most talented dog that I have ever seen in person.

I didn’t say “everybody else does it”. I said animals, at least some of them, do know about alcohol and seek it out deliberately. Birds get “drunk” off slightly-overripe berries, many jungle animals including monkeys will deliberately eat fermenting fruit. And, as I mentioned earlier, right in my general neighborhood there are at least two elephant herds that I am aware of that like to go on palm-wine benders. Obviously it’s not right to force an animal to become drunk as was described in OP, but saying “animals don’t know better” is ignorant.

Are domesticated animals, i.e. the dog in question, *not* under our stewardship?
Are we not responsible for preventing them from doing things harmful to them, whenever humanly possible?

Bringing wild animals into the discussion is a red herring, at best.

The topic is giving a pet dog alcohol.

*Not* what animals in “nature” do, apparently to their great detriment.

And animals do not and can not “know better”.

They are animals.

Until animals are capable of moral decisions, they are also incapable of “knowing better”.

Lemmings run off cliffs.

Should this be an acceptable behavioral norm for all small mammals, then?

[and sorry, that was a red herring retort]
