Mine are on lean cuisine science diet already. Try mixing chick peas in with his food that worked for loosh.
How did you do that again? My sister’s dog is overweight and always hungry. She could use the chickpea plan.
No need for drastic measures. We are trying simply feeding him his food instead of treats and table scraps so much.

chick peas are not really drastic measures. The vet said that chickpeas are pure protein and that they were very good for them. Because my dogs are prone to/have heart conditions, salt is a no-no. so i could not use canned chick peas. So i soaked and cooked them from scratch with a piece of chicken to flavor them. I would mash them up bc otherwise you will see them fully formed in the yard later... I mixed half the regular food with half the chickpea mixture. it makes them full and it isn’t as high in calories as the dogfood. If you can get them to like them enough he said you can actually mash them and bake them into cookies to make your own low cal treats. I never did that. I have found “no salt” treats for Chan bc she can’t have any salt at all now. and i had to order a salt free dogfood for her from the vet. chan, bc she has so few teeth, prefers the chewy cookies and they almost all have salt. i don’t know if salt is what makes the treats soft and chewy or not. i have finally found some she likes that are salt free. Jules is not picky in the slightest and will eat any cookie no matter what it is made of!
do you guys brush their teeth? we were bad and didn’t do it for Chan and she ended up having so many pulled bc of the decay. the vet yesterday said that Jules has a lot of tartar on the front fangs and that i need to brush them. He eats the dental treats but they don’t chew with the front teeth, so they don’t help that, but those have helped the back ones stay tartar free. i don’t know if cavs are more prone to tooth decay or what. Chan is a total treat snob, she will smell it and either eat it or just walk away. Jules has never met a treat he didn’t consider delicious!
I saw that cat story on the news early this AM, and I was amazed at the cluelessness. Having had pets in the house all my life, including when the cub was a newborn, there is a rule a sensible pet owner follows-never leave even a pet parakeet alone with a child under 10 or so-they do not know how to treat an animal, and it is a recipe for disaster.
Did the idiot couple have the cat or the baby first? Since we infantilize our pets just by feeding and cuddling them, they are hard-wired to be jealous of a newcomer, whether child or pet, seeing it as competition-”you’ve got to keep them separated”...
Those people need to let a shelter find that cat a home with someone who has no kids, and knows something about cats. I have a 22 pound cat, and I’m sure he could do some damage on a rampage-that couple has no business with any pet other than a rock, in my opinion-you have to show the pet who is the alpha early on-and you don’t ever freak out and hide in a room...
I think they have chickpeas in the “ethnic food” aisle at Giant Eagle.
My dog will eat anything. We feed him a good dry food that we get mail order. He is a beggar and a starer and will try to get some of anything you have.
I think my daughter made an effort once or twice to brush his teeth, but no, it’s not something we usually do.
oh we have begging and staring going on here nonstop. and when we had a regular height kitchen table and Loosh, someone would leave the chair out when they left the table and if you turned your back he would be on all fours on the table top eating off any plates he found there! i LOVE our bar height table and chairs and no four legged creature can get up on them.
Chickpeas aka garbanzo beans are common on salad bars and can be found with the baked beans, great northern beans, kidney beans in the BEAN section of the grocery store!
Last year, Husky girl needed to lose about 8 pounds, so I just traded the fattening soft treats for the American made-no China-rawhide chewy/hard ones, and stopped letting her have more than a bite of the wholewheat bread from my occasional deli sandwich, putting the rest out for the birds-she is now 7 pounds lighter.
Huskies are very destructive if they are bored or lonely-check out some of the stuff on youtube-so mine has always gotten rawhide chews to amuse her-along with 3 cats-while I’m at work. I feed her pedigree dry food with a couple tablespoons of one of those fancy Beneful prepared meals mixed in. She has great teeth, even at 15 but I don’t know if the chewing stuff and kibble is why...
its prob genetic, bc my dogs have never lacked for the rawhide chews, the braided bully sticks etc. I do not give them any table scraps at all. They get boiled chicken mixed in with their food, just a few little pieces, and Chan is getting her pills buried in pieces of chicken bc she got tired of the salt-free peanut butter i was coating them in. Its much easier to find the made in USA treats now and petsmart has a big selection.
I’ve noticed too that there are almost no Chinese dog treats in the pet section of the grocery store now-or even in the dollar stores, which is great because before I was going to great lengths to avoid the Chinese stuff out of fear of poisoning my dog...
I just happened to remember that a few years ago we were discussing the disgusting ingredients listed on the labels of some of the dog chews here...

Lordy i just had a call from the national republican senatorial campaign, boy was he bound and determined to be heard by me, i had to TALK LOUDLY over him to say, oh no, no, no. We are not remotely happy with how things are going in the Republican Party and we will NOT be supporting you, but thanks anyway, and hung up. I think they must be encountering some pushback on their calls bc he clearly was not taken aback at my trying to voice my displeasure!
Out here they don’t bother you on the phone much, but the mail has been full of the begging Party newsletters with a detachable strip at the bottom for the amount of your donation-and even an envelope with postage. I’ve been sending the strip back in the envelope with the words, because your lack of courage contributed to this administration ruining the economy, I will not donate to you.
I’ll send to Ted Cruz and Greg Abbot if I have an extra $5 or $10, but I’ll send it to them, not the Party...
You just have to brush the outside of their teeth, as the tongue is supposed to keep the inside clean. They always brush at the groomers for us, too. I should do it daily, but am lax about it.
Pill pockets work great. Just pop the pill in the smelly things and squeeze them shut. Looks and smells like treats.
