What about wandering dogs? Or do you just shoot at cats? You sound like some of my mental midget inlaws who would take cats and bash them against a tree just because they didn’t like them. You’d go them one better and shoot the cat sleeping on your car while it is still on the car.

Oh wait, your well groomed lawn is more important. I guess you’d have no problem with me killing your dog if it takes a dump in my yard, my right I guess.

Just like the cops who come into a house and shoot the dog that a lot of posters here rail about.

You’re the type of gun owner who gives gun owners a bad name and and would shoot at a kid or the dog he’s walking across your yard.

I’d still ensure your ass would be in jail.

Big talk for such a small mind. While I stand full up for the 2nd Amendment, I’d actively work to see your guns taken from you; you’re obviously dangerous to anyone who might set you off.

He who flings poo, should expect to receive some back his way. Undeniable fact of life.

I have always had dogs on the farm and yes, have had problems with them roaming over the years. But they served a valuable purpose, often being a driveway doorbell... I always try to be the best possible neighbor and fasten them when necessary.

Recently had a confrontation with a neighbor (female animal lover nut) who would not control her dogs after about a dozen warnings. I printed out a copy of the Pennsylvania Game Law concerning dogs chasing wild game and gave it to her after she threatened to call the SPCA on me if I harmed her dogs.

I gave her a copy of the law:

§ 2381. Dogs pursuing, injuring or killing game or wildlife. Except as otherwise provided in this title or by commission regulation, it is unlawful for any person controlling or harboring a dog to permit the dog to chase, pursue, follow upon the track of, injure or kill any game or wildlife at any time.

§ 2384. Declaring dogs public nuisances. Any dog pursuing or following upon the track of any big game animal in such close pursuit as to endanger the big game animal or to be in the act of attacking the big game animal at any time is hereby declared to be a public nuisance and may be destroyed
as provided in this title.

§ 2385. Destruction of dogs declared public nuisances.
(a) General rule.—A dog declared a public nuisance pursuant to section 2384 (relating to declaring dogs public nuisances)may be killed by any commission officer at any time or by any person when the dog is found to be in the act of attacking a big game animal.
(b) Reports after killing dog.—Any person who kills a licensed dog pursuant to subsection (a) and section 2384 shall notify the owner or a commission officer within 48 hours after the dog was killed. The person who killed the dog or the commission officer who receives the report shall disclose to the owner of the dog the time, place, circumstances relating to the death of the dog and the location of the dog’s remains. All equipment found on the dog, including collar, name tag, license tag or any other personal property, shall be returned to the owner of the dog within ten days after conclusion of any prosecution or immediately if no prosecution is contemplated.
(c) Inapplicability of certain laws.—
(1) The provisions of 18 Pa.C.S. § 5511 (relating to cruelty to animals) shall not apply to any person killing any dog pursuant to subsection (a).
(2) The provisions of 42 Pa.C.S. Ch. 85 (relating to matters affecting government units) shall not apply to any agency, commission or department or any officers charged by law with enforcing the provisions of this title.

This pretty much says it all... (cruelty to animals) shall not apply to any person killing any dog pursuant to subsection (a).

(a turkey is a big game animal in PA)

Where does it end? That line of thinking just leads to a poo arms race!

“Would it be ok for me to shoot your dog when it runs into my yard and is not threatening me?”

That depends. Are you a police officer or no?

Some Californian moved down the street from my folks in AZ, with a bunch of cats that they let roam free, just as you say. The only problem is, in that part of the country, the neighbors don’t need to shoot feral cats, because the wildlife takes care of them.

Within a week, the lady was putting up “Missing Cat” flyers. I’m not sure if anybody had the heart to tell her that they were bobcat feed by that time.

Our neighbors live far away from each other. One of them saw my cat running loose.
“I saw a cat that looked like your cat running loose. It had something in its mouth, like a bird. Are you sure it’s a good idea to let it run loose?”
“It wasn’t a bird. It was a rat. Would you rather have the cat running loose or the rat”
“Good point”.
The cat is too fat to catch a bird.

Like the time I heard this:
“Your cats are killing my birds”
“Your birds are crapping on my car”

That’s what I like about cats. One day, they just don’t come home. And they aren’t actionable like a dog.

You should send an anonymous picture of Wyle E. Coyote with the caption “Got Cat?” on it. ;)

No, you don't 'stand full up for the 2nd Amendment' if you're willing to strip me of my rights because I'm willing to act within my state and local laws by using my firearm to dispense with animals that pose a threat to my livestock then you most certainly do not support the 2nd Amendment.

As to any danger I may pose to you I'd suggest that you avoid trespassing in Wyoming and you won't have to worry about it.

Well, I'm a serious cat lover, but I don't take offense to what you've said. Feral cats can be a problem anywhere, as they were even in my suburban neighborhood. A person's livelihood, and most certainly their kids, take precedence every time. And cat owners should be held to the same standard as dog owners -- cats do NOT have some sort of privilege to go anywhere they please.

But I do hope you'll reconsider your "cat folk are all liberals" stance. That really hurts! ;-)

(grin)

I'm in a rural area, and keep horses. If you've got horses you have grain. That means rats. So it's keep cats or snakes.

I prefer cats.

Occasionally feral cats cats show up and kick my cats off their food dish and do battle with Thompson, my tomcat, or beat up on Barnkitty my fixed female, hunter, killer. Thompson kinda earns his keep but he is lazy.

Problem cats are trapped. I send pics to my few neighbors inquiring as to ownership. If the cat is locally owned I tell them I'll let it go in two days. Then it gets a really miserable two days in the cage. Trapped ferals are shot outright.

Very large coyote population around here and I've lost three Thompsons in the last 7 years. Dogs and horses can't be everywhere all the time but they are both death on coyotes. An occasional lure and kill coyote party is held around here to control the numbers.

There's a neighborhood red tailed hawk that frequently flies through the barn looking for a snack. Barnkitty doesn't want a piece of him or her!

Barn cats are amazing animals. Many are aloof, but some of them are as cuddly and loving as any indoor cats I’ve known.

So much of this “argument” depends on where you are and the circumstances. In a suburban subdivision such as mine, I think it’s reasonable to give an otherwise non-threatening animal (feline, canine, whatever) and its owner a first-trespass “warning”. But there are a lot of places where you just can’t be that generous. What works in central Maryland simply isn’t feasible in ranch country “out West.”

Barnkitty is a pound rescue raised in a cage. I rescued her at about 3 months old. Turned her loose in the barn and gave her a good feeding of canned food everyday. Didn’t take long for her inner lion to start slaying the rats. She will allow and occasionally relish my petting her. More feral than not but also allows the dogs to give her a sniff and tentative lick. She cuddles up to a horse or two when it’s cold overnight. I think she shuttles between the stalls for any given night. The permanent horses accept her but some transients are reluctant.

Sorry! It’s just a general observation from personal experience and is not a ‘rule’ of any kind. No offense intended and props to you for being a responsible cat lover!
