Word For The Day, Wednesday, 3/12/14
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
end of the world, end of time, climax of history Etymology:
Etymology: "divinely ordained climax of history," 1935, from Gk. eskhaton, neut. of eskhatos (see eschatology).
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Modern usage of the phrase started with Eric Voegelin in The New Science of Politics in 1952. Conservative spokesman William F. Buckley popularized Voegelin's phrase as "Don't immanentize the eschaton!" Buckley's version became a political slogan of Young Americans for Freedom during the 1950s and 1960s.
Voegelin identified a number of similarities between ancient Gnosticism and the beliefs held by a number of modernist political theories, particularly Communism and Nazism. He identified the root of the Gnostic impulse as social alienation, that is, a sense of disconnection from society and a belief that this lack of concord with society is the result of the inherent disorder, or even evil, of the world. He described this alienation as having two effects:
The belief that the disorder of the world can be transcended by extraordinary insight, learning, or knowledge, called a Gnostic Speculation by Voegelin (the Gnostics themselves referred to this as gnosis). The desire to implement a policy to actualize the speculation, or as Voegelin said, to Immanentize the Eschaton, to create a sort of heaven on earth within history. One of the more oft-quoted passages from Voegelin's work on Gnosticism is that "The problem of an eidos in history, hence, arises only when a Christian transcendental fulfillment becomes immanentized. Such an immanentist hypostasis of the eschaton, however, is a theoretical fallacy."
The book Fire in the Minds of Men explores the idea further
get about immanentizing, then.
Can winter be done already?
No, it can’t. It was 68 yesterday. Today we will get 2-4 inches of snow.
Something on the order of an 80 degree drop in less than 72 hours.
Then that snow hits the northeast.
going to be in the 70s again today, and then plummeting to 22 degrees tonight.
I live in the town where the cop said he’d give his left nut to bust down doors to confiscate guns. As a citizen, not a subject of the USA, I feel like eschaton my rights with his comment. Thankfully most cops in town that I’ve spoken with don’t agree with him.
No snow predicted for the CT shoreline, but a frozen, icy mess tomorrow morning.
allow me to b!tch about the faucet i got when we had the kitchen remodeled. the handle has fallen off this $700 item TWICE in 6 mo. i am going to talk to Amazon to see if anything can be done, but this cannot be normal to have the thing break constantly with normal usage. We have lived in this house 15 yrs or so and had only 2 faucets in that time period, and those were builder grade faucets prior to this one.
WOW, i saw that story, didn’t realize that it’s where you live. That is pretty outrageous, i hope the guy is feeling some heat from the citizenry for that remark. A+++
I love that you used this today. I just read about it recently, I think from something Jonah wrote.
yes i think he used it in his Gfile one friday and i emailed myself from home to the ofc with the phrase to use for WFTD. it was def jonah inspired.
Sounds wonderful. I would ask for a new one, it should still be under warranty.
While you’re complaining, want to say anything about Crosby? ;-)
It's a put on...it's a put on...
come on join the party...
Statements like that should render him as being unfit for duty..
That's every leftist, progressive movement, right?
Building the New Soviet Man and other programs based on this idea of using political power to re-shape the world into perfection.
Dressed to kill.
They “don’t agree with him”, but are they passively endorsing him with “silence as consent”?
If it’s Who lyrics, I’ve always been partial to this:
There was a beautiful white horse
I saw on a dream stage
He had a snake the size of a sewer pipe
Livin’ in his rib cage
I felt like a pickled priest
Who was being flambed
That’s mildly disturbing.
yes amazon has a 30 day return policy, but it didn’t break the first time until 4 mo after we got it. they have directed me to kohler and hopefully they will provide a new one.
I have nothing to say about Crosby. The caps suck beyond belief, have ZERO defense. Stick a fork in them cuz they are done. There is no confidence in the GM, he has stuck with this group through thick and thin, mostly THIN. If George McFee isn’t fired after this season then he has naked pix of Ted doing something with farm animals, IMO.
When you assume the innate “goodness” of the human condition,
and therefore assume that bad choices and behaviors are in response to environment,
then it “makes sense” to want to create the environment which evokes that “goodness” all the time.
Of course, the people creating that environment are innately good and can be fully entrusted with all the power necessary to create it.
Now, back in Realville as God created it - man is FALLEN, innately sinful, and cannot be trusted with power over his fellow man.
I love giving myself an earworm....grrrr.
In the middle of a love song, too.
Yes, I meant with the manufacturer, primarily, but if Amazon could help you lean on them, that would be nice.
Sorry you are too dis-spirited to even make any Cindy jokes.
The Thousand Year Reich.......
Nietzsche’s “ubermensch” as well....
The police department and the first selectmans office aren’t doing much other than fielding phone calls from very pissed off people all over the country.
I have never had any dealings with this officer that i can recall. Being a fisherman in a nice Connecticut shoreline town seems to make one a target of the cops, too, so i’ve gotten to know a lot of the cops, he’s not one I remember. Those I’ve spoken too also speak highly of him, well, they did before this incident.
Honestly, from the talk around town, they cannot put this guy back on the streets or he’ll get shot on day 1 he comes back from his extended workers comp leave he’s on right now. People are THAT pissed.
I was at the quarter finals for the division 2 high school hockey championships last night that my “son in law” was playing with, and while outside having a smoke, a person from the opposing team even mentioned this incident, and offered support, as in, “if you guys need help down here, give me a call, i have about a dozen guys who are ready to go” kind of thing.
I swear it feels like my town is becoming ready to be the new Lexington of the American revolution.
That’s the bomb!
yep. not a cindy joke to be had.
that is wild—but good to hear that the people are ready to NOT sit for it. hopefully the guy is smart enough to know he’s a walking target and will just lay low.
Kohler appears aware of the problem, they are going to send out replacement parts for the inner workings of the handle. i asked the woman if others have had the problem and she said she actually has the faucet in her kitchen, and has had no problem, but they are aware that there have been problems and she claims that these parts will fix it. We will see.
Why does being a fisherman make you a target for the police?
I could see the game warden wanting to make sure you have licenses.
Which is why It follows that our framed Government (not as it actually exists in the moment, sadly) os the better of all others, as it is built to constrain the baser impulses borne from the exercise of power.....
Well put Mr.B.!
Heard next door to the Bow Bells in London: “ ‘E peed on Sibelius and eschaton Zerobama.”
That sounds promising. They are responsive, as they should be for something that expensive.
What I posted was my current “explanation” of liberalism.
I believe it to be accurate with respect to understanding how the world was created, why it is the way it is, and ultimately, what the “cure” is (and is not).
Same reason Gibson Guitars is the subject of armed raids by DFWS...
Got a black uniform and a silver badge
Playin’ cops for real/playin’ cops for pay
Let’s ride, lowride
The left newspapers might whine a bit
But the guys at the station they don’t give a shit
Dispatch calls “Are you doin’ something wicked?”
“No siree, Jack, we’re just givin’ tickets”
As we ride, ride, how we ride
Let’s ride, lowride
literally LOLed! A++++
i have taken a lot of crap both from xshub and mr bahrami our contractor, for wanting a faucet that expensive.
You have to have a special caste that is inherently good.
Otherwise it all falls apart logically. If the environment shapes the person, and we don’t have the perfect environment, then we don’t have any perfect people.
But without any perfect people, how can we build the perfect environment?
I know, and I totally agree...I always see that comparison as it plays out in our system of government versus, the ones Dave and I just mentioned...I’ve made your statement a bevy of times....
Sadly, it is not accepted as axiomatic in Political Science circles...lol
Can’t....perfection is a road, not a destination.
But, the first step on that road, is restraining the lesser angels of Mans nature.
The second (and we have strayed from that pearl of wisdom our Forefathers bequeathed to us...sadly) is accepting that as the governing principle. Pretty much in Mr.B’s succinct terms.
Obviously, it has to fall apart logically, because it’s false.
My “benchmark lib” asserts that people only act badly in response to threats. So why are those who are threatening them doing so?
Usually the answer isn’t logically consistent, like “those with power/money exploit those without” or something, which begs the question as to why they would do such a thing if people only act badly (ie, threaten others) if they are threatened.
I never can, and never will, get a logically consistent response, because it simply doesn’t exist.
Access issues, property issues, noise issues, litter issues, "being out at night", too many cops in town, etc. This is a fairly small town, fishing access is really limited, and some of the people here are serious dickheads when they see us fishermen. Snooty dicks who think they are rich.
No, I should have said they disagree with Peterson. They are hunters and gun owners, too, one said he did register, but wouldn't have if he wasn't a cop, and he won't be involved with what he agrees is unconstitutional laws.
Yeah, try proving criminal intent here. LOL
They need to call in this douchebag.
