Mr. Canipe, a veteran of the Vietnam War, stopped his truck when signaled. Without being prompted, he then proceeded to step out of his pickup truck to see what the problem might be.
Lacking the strength to walk properly, Mr. Canipe then reached into his truck to pick up his walking stick, as he had done countless times before. But this time was different. Canipe was in the presence of a police officer. The disabled Vietnam veteran was listed in fair condition on Wednesday night.
When did they start hiring pussies to be cops?
With police, do what you are told when told, nothing more, nothing less. Especially with these militarized thinking police.
Prayer up for his recovery.
When affirmative action became mandatory.
Here's the really stupid part of this - there is NO standardized protocol for traffic stops. For years the Texas Highway patrol demanded that you step out of your car. They would approach no closer than the back bumper till you were outside. A few years ago they suddenly decided that you MUST stay in the car until they walk up to the window. Now it is about half and half. When you are stopped you really have no idea what they want you to do.
If the police can't even standardize on something as simple as are you to stay in the car or get out, it is no wonder they are consistently inconsistent on everything else.
Well, at least the cops got to go home safe that night.
Good thing the ignorant cop was a lousy shot.
It really sucks to wear a uniform, be a Highway Patrol, Trooper, Policeman.
Because all the problems coming from Obama down is falling upon the LEO, and they know the people of America are snapping back.
America is frustrated because they cannot remove Obama, so they are lashing back at ANY authority.
And the cops are too high strung.
Something is causing this irrational fear of being shot or otherwise attacked in LEO’s these days. I suspect that they’re being constantly briefed on how bad things are getting and how bad they can expect things to get.
If they’re this trigger happy now, it’s frightening to imagine how they’ll behave once “civilians” start defending themselves.
I retired from law enforcement in So. Cal in 1987, and what passes for justified shootings nowadays would have landed you in prison back in my day.
Makes me think a little when I have to use a cane when my knee acts up, could get a person shot now days by an idiot cop.
You really think so? I just think it's under trained, over scared cops.
Good thing this cop went through all of those training classes about firearm restraint and situational assessment. Those classes make him a professional - certified in the proper use of firearms under stressful conditions, in full accordance ith the law.
That training certification and professional experience is precisely why he can own and carry fully automatic weapons, and you cannot.
They are basically at WAR with half of America. End prohibition, and it takes the target off the backs of half of the citizens, and the Popo. Then they can get back to protecting and serving, instead of Nazi storm-trooping Constitutional rights stomping oppressors.
I can only speak for my locality being Alaska, and the Alaska State Trooper to me is of the highest standards, yet they too still have to draw guns, a suspected DUI driver tried to run down a Trooper last weekend and a local PD, they shot and killed him, the driver was actually on an Alaska TV reality show I think, so it happens everywhere, many are good and honorable but many are just tools to gather fines, code enforcement fees etc.
And some are just sadistic monsters who get off subjugating others. We have all arguably ran across that kind of a person in life.
It’s a different country now. The man knew a country in which you respected cops, and they didn’t live in fear of citizens.
Today, a lot of low-lifes hate cops and the cops don’t know what’s coming next.
So, an innocent man meets a suspicious and wary cop, and this is what happens.
It’s a very different country now. I know it is, but I think of elderly people I know who haven’t realized what has happened, and who see nothing wrong with holding a TV remote or a cell phone while speaking with a cop.
Is the country I knew ever coming back?
Yeah, and I guess all the 9-12 year olds in the Middle East that carry AK’s all the time are as trained as them.
Who cares about an old useless feeder?
The only thing that matters is that the Law Enforcement Officer got to go home that night!
They always have. Some are Freepers.
This is an officer who should not get to go home safe.
So you're saying that non-cop adult Americans are comparable in maturity, responsibility and intelligence to 9-12 year olds in the Middle East?
You sure you're on the right website?
I guess he is lucky the cop didn’t handcuff, taser, and beat him, too.
No dogs in this one.
Not sure I understand what the problem is.
I don’t see a dead dog....
Maybe that’s why the poor old man got shot, I mean something needs to be shot.
“Have gun, will shoot”.
Yup, look the same to me, and I always jam the end of the gun into the ground when I take it out of my truck. < /sarc>
No! I’m saying that you don’t need mucho training in order to work with a full auto weapon. Stupid laws in this country punish law abiding citizens from owning full auto which is a crock of $hit.BTW,FYI , I don’t trust any LEO’s in this country since they all went Rambo. The way LEO’s have been going rogue lately because of power trips or whatever leads me to believe there are probably many 12 years olds in the Middle East that have more common sense than many law officers in this country.
Ah, my mistake. Sorry. In fact, I completely agree with you.
What I worry about most is that this is a two-part problem. The first part is, obviously, reining in the rogue LEOs who are looking to harm or kill on the slightest pretence, and thereby spread fear in the population.
But the second part is just as important - the loss of genuine peace officers. I often say I believe in that “thin blue line” because it’s true, and something people need to reflect on. We NEED good cops. We can’t throw the baby out with the bathwater here, or just “get rid of” the police. That would, literally, be suicide.
So by poisoning the minds of the people against cops generally, recovery back to a balanced and trusted police by the citizenry is made all that much harder. It’s an absolutely insidious undermining of the public trust by the Left. Evil, in fact.
A lot of low-lifes ARE cops now. When I first became a firefighter the cops we worked with - older guys who were about to retire and served in Vietnam or middle aged guys from the first Gulf War were stand up guys. Peace Officers. But about 15 years ago the new recruits started going all Barney on us. Fully half of the cops I know now I wouldn’t trust to guard a turnip.
No, it is the cops’ own actions that is turning people against them. Obama has nothing to do with this.
I thought cops were to shoot to kill. Shooting to wound is just in the movies. This guy blew it.
Right. Stay put and keep your hands still when stopped by police. If a cop feels threatened you could be blown away.
So how about if a citizen feels threatened by a cop?
Lemme guess . . . the rectal cavity wearing the uniform “felt threatened.”
What did the poor soul that almost got killed do to lash out at the cop? I say almost, because the cop shot to kill him, that he did not kill him is not for lack of trying.
Shit, breathing around a cop now can get you shot. The best thing is to avoid them like the plague. You get to celebrate more birthdays when you do that.
You were one of the good guys. Thank you.
Same thing: Stay put and keep your hands still.
With all due respect to Mr. Carnipe, there's the action that started a tragic and unnecessary course of action.
First rule of thumb is to remain in one's vehicle with hands clearly visible on the steering wheel, and wait for the officer to give you instructions.
It seems every time one of these things happens it's because people either don't know what to do/how to act when they get pulled over (as is I suspect the case here) or they just act like idiots because they think they can.
So, if a cop "feels threatened" he is free to gun you down?
But if you are a citizen and feel the cop is threatening your life, just sit there and hope he does not execute you?
That's about it. Because if you make a sudden move he may shoot you. I'm not saying the cop is in the right.
That is the primary justification for cop shootings: “The officer felt threatened.” Doesn’t matter whether the threat was real or not.
That is one of the saddest posts I have seen on FR. Good enough place to bump the thread.
Exactly right. Blaming Obama is a diversion from where the responsibility lies.
there is NO standardized protocol for traffic stops.
***How about this? A bumper sticker that signals to cops that the person who is stopped will act in a pre-described fashion, whether that is getting out or staying in with your hands on the wheel or whatever is proscribed by the 0rganization described y the bumper sticker. And as far as I’m concerned, whatever that cooperation is, it also includes video surveillance of the scene.
“Stay put and keep your hands still.”
AND, make sure the cop can see BOTH of them.....
I suppose that would work, but I really don’t understand why there can’t be ONE standard throughout the country. When you are pulled over by the police do this:(stay in your car; get out of your car; put your hands out the window.)Just decide dammit and stick to it!
