Angry hockey fans sue arena over beer scam

Fans of the Idaho Steelheads hockey team are suing the arena where home games are played because the concession stand sells a large beer in a tall skinny cup for $7 and a small beer in a short wide cup for $4, but both cups hold the same amount of beer.

Fans of the ECHL team are seeking $10,000 in damages, The Associated Press reported.

A fan posted a video to YouTube showing the amount of beer in each cup is the same.

Eric Trapp, president of CenturyLink Arena, acknowledged the problem on the team's Facebook page.

"The differentiation in the size of the two cups is too small. To correct that problem, we're purchasing new cups for the large beers that will hold 24 ounces, instead of 20, for the remainder of this season to provide better value to our fans," he wrote in a statement.

Though I'm sorry the fans had to bring lawyers into it, I'm pleased the solution came through customers and not government regulators.

I mean, how stupid can you be to try such a scam?

So you still pay 75% more for 20% more beer. What a bargain.

So let me see. The owner is going to make things right. Then you can buy 20 oz for $4 or 24 oz for $7. BFD. The additional 4oz will cost you $3. Really BFD.

I worked (briefly) at a restaurant in 1972 where we used a short stubby 10 oz glass for the small drink at $0.20 and a taller fluted 10 oz glass for the large drink at $0.30.

No different than restaurants, where you pay more for a bowl of soup than for a cup of soup, even though both hold the same quantity.

And in October of that year, EEE came into the world!

You beat me to that one. I can't think of a lot of worse venues to stiff on the beer - a Hell's Angels party, maybe...

It’s like the parking meters in the little town down the road. Half hour for a dime and a whole hour for a quarter. Two dimes took cars of it for me.

How in the world can you talk about "value" when you're charging $7.00 (or even $4.00) for a beer?

No—it just means the short cup will be less of a bargain: no longer the same amount of beer for only 57% of the cost of the tall cup.

I heard a caller on a sports talk radio show outta Philly once exclaim, “Yeah, so I went to The Vet for the Eagles game on Sunday... I bought $100 worth of beer, and I didn’t even get a buzz!”

If you like the small beer you have, you can keep it.
If you like the “large” beer you have, you can keep it. Period.

Another way to look at it, if you don’t say anything and just buy the small beer you get a deal. . .
