Unlike the average Beltway insider, a report by Interest.com claims the majority of medium-income American households in 24 of 25 cities studied cannot afford the average new-car price of $32,086.
AOL Autos reports the study focused on each citys median income in relation to the new-car price average as pegged by Kelley Blue Book. Said price was broken down to monthly payments of $633 per month for 48 months with 20 percent down while interest, insurance and principal exceeded no more than 10 percent of the households gross income.
The only city out of 25 to pull off the feat? Washington, D.C., whose residents can afford the average of $32,531 on a new car, broken down to 48 monthly payments of $641.

Wash DC is full of poor people. How the heck do ghetto residents buy these cars???
They’re using the SMSA otherwise referred to as the “beltway region”.
How about a medium income family in real America?
A person can drown wading across a river that averages 1 inch deep.
Fed government employees get compensation 50% above the folks who elect them.
Fed workers vote for dems who kick back wage increases in exchange for getting elected.
If that isn’t a bribe what is. Wink Wink
Not only the big sales price, but then you’ve got big property taxes every year afterwards. I dread having to get a new car.
It’s no accident that most luxury models have increasing sales.
Fastest growing car companies, however, tend to sell a lot of cheaper cars outside the US market.
Pickups, SUVs, and midsize sedans still dominate the US market, but I’d guess disaster is looming: Too many people have vehicles they really can’t afford.
I bought a new car three years and put down money I had saved.
“Fed government employees get compensation 50% above the folks who elect them.
Fed workers vote for dems who kick back wage increases in exchange for getting elected.
If that isnt a bribe what is. Wink Wink”
Total BS. Federal workers make considerably less than the going market salary rate.
On top of that Federal pay rates are graduated to each local economy.
The ONLY reason why they are higher here than most parts of the country is due to the cost of living in DC area. Check the housing prices here buddy.
After you burn down DC, I guess your next stop will be Silicon Valley and other high paying metropolitan areas right?
Go online and check the Federal pay scale. If anything Gov. workers in DC are paid an average of 15K less than their industry counterparts.
Get your facts straight.
Just six months ago, I purchased a very nice Hyundai for well under $20,000 including all of the taxes and fees. Why would people pay more than that if they can’t afford it? There are quite a few choices in that price range.
Or any cars at all, for that matter? Ever hear of public transportation? It helps keep the roads clear for people who need the roads, like government workers doing important jobs.
We’re supposed to feel bad that the Average Joe can’t afford a car payment of more than $600 per month?
Exactly.
You can’t fool me.
A snippet from factcheck.org:
...the average salary for civilian federal employees was $81,258 in 2009 about 61 percent higher than the $50,462 paid to the average private sector worker.
So, it was 61% higher a few years ago. I doubt much has changed.
The reason the cost of living is so much higher in DC is because the salaries of GERBs are so inflated — not the other way around.
Regarding your post #6, Federal government employees are not elected. This may come as a surprise to you. I imagine a lot of things would come as a surprise to you.
And that remark about federal workers working for Democrats and kicking back wage increases in exchange for getting elected, now that’s a good one. Wow! Your ignorance knows no bounds.
Perhaps you are speaking of members of the House and Senate. They get elected but I’m still wondering how they go about “kicking back” wage increases to those who elect them.
You really need to go about learning something about politics. You really do.
I don’t know where ‘Fact’ chucker get’s it facts but I live it everyday here partner.
Fact is I can pull 120K-130K in the private sector all day long but the same qualified Fed worker pulls in 15K less in the Gov. in THIS AREA.
Fact checker is full of it.
Don’t believe me, pull up a FY 14 Gov. pay scale then compare to the rest of the private industry in this and other high tech areas.
As a matter of fact, I won’t even consider going into the Government because the pay is so out of whack with what can and do make in the private sector.
Again, Factcheck is full of it.
I’m way more coin as a Project Manager than Gov. reps leading entire divisions WITH budget responsibilities.
There’s your fact check.
